Cleveland’s Forest City Brewery devastated after new housing developer kills trees, founder says

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A Cleveland brewery rooted in local history is devastated after a developer killed two trees while constructing new housing.

The Christoff Group is building a row of townhouses right by Forest City Brewery on Columbus Road on Duck Island.

In the process of construction, two large Mulberry trees were cut in half.

The lost trees were around 150 years old and founder Jay Demagall thinks they are original to the beer garden.

Forest City Brewery posted on Facebook on Aug. 10, following severe weather in Cleveland, a photo of the beloved trees with this caption

Our trees were NOT destroyed by the storm. The tallest red mulberry in the state of Ohio, “Big Red” and White Mulberry “Berry White” are now dead due to the “development” next door. Stay tuned and stop by to see how we try to remedy this tree slaughter in the oldest beer garden in the USA

Demagall told 19 News that he knew the trees were going to get trimmed but not to this extent and he is considering legal action.

Now, Demegall is focused on revamping the beer garden, which will include a chainsaw artist turning the large stumps into totem poles.

The attorney representing Christoff Group, the developers, provided 19 News with the following statement:

The Christoff Group is dedicated to fostering strong relationships with local communities and governments. On July 31, 2024, the City of Cleveland granted us a permit to trim trees encroaching on our Columbus Road property. A City-approved arborist conducted the trimming in strict accordance with Ohio law and the site-specific tree preservation plan that was prepared and approved for the area. Throughout the permit approval process, we maintained open communication with the community at open meetings and with our neighbors at Forest City Brewing to ensure transparency and cooperation.

Unfortunately, the tornadoes that struck the Cleveland area shortly after the trimming caused further damage to the trees, leading to additional branch falls. Despite these challenges, we are excited to continue our work in Duck Island with the development of the Burik Luxury Townhomes, our second project in this vibrant neighborhood. We look forward to welcoming more residents and contributing to the growth of this wonderful community.
