Despite Canada and the U.S. not exactly being on the best terms right now, with talks of trade wars kicking off and diplomatic riffs, there’s one thing that seems to unite U.S. travelers on either side of the political spectrum:
Toronto’s sheer amazingness as a destination.
Last year, Canada’s largest city and its main tourist destination logged in a whopping 9 million overnight visitors, 2.7 of which came from abroad, with Americans leading in numbers amongst non-Canadian guests, followed by Brits and Germans.
We know, numbers can be boring to some, so we will keep them at a minimum––onto the actual good part now: why is Toronto having record-shattering levels of tourism right now?
Toronto Is Canada’s Most Vibrant City Break
Like the average North American city, Toronto is a skyscraper-dominated metropolis straddling a major body of water––in this case, Lake Ontario––except it has a thing or two that differentiates it from the rest.
For starters, it is dotted with green spaces, such as High Park, which offers tourists a wide range of landscaping, lush gardens in summer and recreational zones;
It plays host to world-class museums like the Royal Ontario Museum, or ROM, Canada’s largest for world culture exhibits, and Casa Loma, a literal castle plucked out of a storybook for children;
Toronto is certainly no Quebec City or European-pretty, but the innovative architecture is an attraction in its own right: think the CN Tower, one of the highest manmade viewpoints in Canada, or the 56-stories-high, modernistDominion Bank Tower;
Finally, there’s the thriving social scene and nightlife, with an aptly-titled Entertainment District being packed full of bars and laid-back eateries.
This is hardly any news, and though these alone would warrant a visit to Toronto, we know you’re probably wondering why it’s blowing up in popularity right now––it’s not even like it’s shorts weather most of the year, right?
What’s New In Toronto In 2025?
Part of the reason why 2025 is expected to become a defining year for Toronto is its hosting of hotel openings and major events, boosted air connectivity, with improved U.S. and Transatlantic links, and significant airport updates.
New Hotel Openings
Let’s start with the hotels: from TOOR Hotel Toronto, to Union Hotel, to a new NOBU, to a luxurious Le Meridien Pinnacle, there are countless listings joining the Toronto hospitality scene.
Out of those, Le Meridien is undoubtedly the one we’re most eager to try, as it will be housed in the famous, 105-story SkyTower, taking up 12 of the lower-level floors, and with a wide range of amenities on-site, including a swimming pool with panoramic views and spa services.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for getaway deals starting this fall, once it opens.
Major Attractions Coming To Toronto In 2025
Next, there are at least two major sports events coming to Toronto this year, if you’re a sports buff yourself: the all-female Northern Super League, set to kick off on April 16 (York Lions Stadium), and the WEE Elimination Chamber, at Rogers Centre.
In the music sphere, we have:
- Billy Joel at the Rogers Centre on March 15th
- Metallica setting up temporary residence at the Rogers Centre from April 24th to 26th
- The hyped Kendrick Lamar-SZA joint tour (again at the Rogers) on June 12th and 13th
- In the same venue, Coldplay on July 7th and 8th
- British pop sensation Dua Lipa at the Scotiabank Arena on September 1st and 2nd
When it comes to new attractions, Canada’s Wonderland will have a brand new roller coaster, AlpenFurry, the longest, tallest, faster launch coaster in Canada, not to mention the revamped version of Gardiner Museum, a ceramics museum on Queens Park that will enter 2025 with a new design and exhibits.
U.S. Pre-clearance Opening In Billy Bishop City Airport
Last but not least, U.S. pre-clearance facilities are coming to Toronto’s secondary airport, Billy Bishop City Airport (YTZ).
This will enable U.S.-bound passengers to complete border screening and undergo U.S. customs ahead of landing in the States on Canadian soil instead.
This speeds up arrival procedures, and it avoids unnecessary waiting for travelers when landing at their destination in the United States, as they are treated as domestic travelers.
Prior to 2025, Toronto Pearson International (YYZ), and Ottawa/Macdonald–Cartier International (YOW) were the only airports in the province of Toronto to offer U.S. pre-clearance.
Speaking of aviation, Air Canada is adding daily frequencies from Toronto to Indianapolis, Boston, Tampa, and Dallas-Fort Worth in the U.S. this year, on top of newly-announced Transatlantic routes to Casablanca-Morocco, Berlin-Germany, and even Prague-Czech Republic.
In other words, this will be, perhaps, the most exciting year for Toronto as a destination since Canada formally reopened for tourism in 2022, following the health crisis.
