Verde Canyon Railroad
This scenic 4 hour train excursion travels twenty mile alongside the beautiful Verde Canyon. A ride the whole family will enjoy, with special themed feature rides throughout the year.
Verde Canyon Railroad – Location
The railway station is located in the town of Clarkdale, Arizona.
The town of Clarkdale is approximately 110 miles or 2 hours north of the City of Phoenix.
It is also ideally situated for those visiting the {Grand Canyon}, just another 2 ½ hours to the north, passing through Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona.
This route is also located on the Historic Route 66.
For outdoor and nature lovers, including those who enjoy train excursions, this journey is a must see and do!
About The Verde Canyon
The Verde Canyon and Valley are filled with a variety of native flora and fauna. Together with its stunning colorful desert rock faces and spectacular scenery, this part of the Canyon is only accessible by rail.
The Verde Valley is located alongside the Mingus and Woodchute Mountain ranges with the Verde River flowing between.
Together with the historic towns of Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood and Jerome, it’s a perfect combination of history and beauty when visiting Northern Arizona.
Verde Canyon Railroad Experience
Your train experience takes you from the town of Clarkdale to its turn-around point at Perkinsville, Arizona.
There’s a recorded narration throughout the journey, offering a glimpse of the area’s history, together with those who lived here in the past and present.
As well, there are guides that will point out areas of interest and much more along the way!
With every turn, you’ll come across beautiful canyon wall shapes and colors, as the train travels inside the canyon along the river bank.
Restored Railway Locomotive And Railway Cars
The standard first class cars offer comfortable seating throughout, and are tastefully decorated in a theme to match the historic past of the railroad and the environment outside.
Each car is air conditioned and staffed with an attendant to assist in any way they can to make your journey as enjoyable and memorable as possible.
Each car has an individually staffed service bar as well, for you to enjoy your favorite beverage during the duration of travel.
These cars offer large viewing windows on both sides for those who prefer to stay indoors in more luxurious comfort.
Amenities included are a champagne welcome aboard toast, a full-service cash bar offering premium liquors, served right at your seat.
As well, you will receive a complimentary bottle of water, together with a nice variety of snack appetizers individually packed.
Open-Air Viewing Cars
All cars access open-air viewing cars with sit down benches and an overhead canopy for shade.
“Outdoor attendants, well-versed in the canyon’s history, geology and wildlife, share highlights and answer questions about our wilderness adventure.”
We spent the majority of the journey outside in the open air car, enjoying the fresh air and ease of picture taking.
Our attendant was absolutely wonderful, eager to point out different rock formations and history along the way.

It was easy to tell, she was passionate about the region and loved her job!
Verde Canyon Railroad Station
At the Station in Clarkdale, there’s everything you need to make your afternoon complete!
From a fully stocked gift store, cafe with a variety of options to choose from for lunch, patio bar and an attractive railcar museum to enjoy.
The gift store offers a variety of unique items created by local and regional artists, together with all your typical favorite souvenir picks to take home with you.
The Copper Spike Cafe serves a variety of menu items to satisfy the most hungry, to those looking for something lighter and even for vegetarians and vegans.
You are welcome to bring your lunch onboard, or enjoy it on the outdoor dining patio.
Located in the patio seating area, there’s an open Beverage Bar offering a nice variety of Arizona craft beers on tap, as well as their special margaritas and private-label wines.
John Bell Museum
Don’t miss a peak in the nicely renovated boxcar museum filled with a collection of train memorabilia and historic artifacts.
Inside, you can always read about the history of the railway and its importance in the area for many years.
A wonderful small addition to the Verde Canyon Railroad Clarkdale Station.
My brother and I had a wonderful afternoon riding the rails and seeing a part of Northern Arizona’s beautiful scenery and learning more of its historic past.
I highly recommend including this superb train journey in your travel plans, when visiting northern Arizona. Together with visiting the nearby historic towns, this 4 hour train ride in Verde Valley was excellent!
We were so pleased we included this while on our way further north to view the Grand Canyon.
