El Salvador may be small, but it offers a world of experiences depending on how you choose to explore it. My friend and I both traveled there separately—one in January, the other in February—but despite visiting the same country, we had completely different journeys.
We’re both travelers, just with different styles.
I’m the kind of traveler who thrives on adventure, discovery, and movement. My friend, on the other hand, travels to slow down, unwind, and take in the beauty of a place at a more relaxed pace.
One of us hiked Santa Ana Volcano and explored San Salvador with an explorer’s mindset. The other soaked up the sun in El Tunco, embracing the rhythm of a coastal escape, but still took a day to experience the capital city in a more laid-back way.
Two different perspectives, one shared appreciation for El Salvador.
The Explorer: Hiking Santa Ana & Discovering San Salvador
Santa Ana Volcano: A Hike Worth Every Step
For me, travel is all about getting out there and experiencing the heart of a place—which meant tackling Santa Ana Volcano, the highest in El Salvador.
The hike was a challenge, winding through rocky trails and steep inclines, but reaching the top made every step worth it. The vivid turquoise crater lake, surrounded by jagged volcanic rock, looked almost unreal. I stood there, breathless—not just from the hike, but from the sheer beauty of the view. From the summit, I could see Lake Coatepeque stretching below and even glimpses of the Pacific Ocean in the distance.
After catching my breath (and snapping a hundred photos), I soaked in the panoramic views of Lake Coatepeque and the Pacific Ocean in the distance. It was a reminder of El Salvador’s untouched natural beauty.
It was one of those moments where you just stop and think, “Wow, this is why I travel.”
Exploring San Salvador: History, Food & City Life
Back in San Salvador, I kept my itinerary full. I wandered through Plaza Libertad, took in the grandeur of the Metropolitan Cathedral, and explored the ornate halls of the National Palace. I wanted to understand the soul of the city, so I spent time in the local markets, chatting with vendors and sampling pupusas straight off the griddle—hot, cheesy, and oh-so-delicious.
For me, San Salvador was a place to be explored, to be understood, to be experienced.
The Leisure Traveler: Beach Bliss & Slow Travel in El Tunco
Finding Serenity in El Tunco
While I was lacing up my hiking boots, my friend was slipping on sandals, heading for the laid-back coastal town of El Tunco.
El Tunco is a place where time seems to slow down, where mornings start with a mimosa and ocean breezes, and where the hardest decision of the day is whether to lounge by the beach or the pool. The town has a laid-back, surfer-meets-traveler energy, where people come to unwind, surf, and simply enjoy life.
Instead of hiking through rugged trails, she spent her days letting the ocean set the pace, soaking in the simple pleasures of good food, good company, and good scenery.
A Relaxed Day in San Salvador
Even though her trip was centered around relaxation, my friend still wanted to experience San Salvador—but at her own pace.
Unlike my fast-moving exploration, she chose to stroll through the city, pausing to take it all in. She visited historic sites, took long coffee breaks, and, of course, stopped by Zara for a little shopping—because every trip deserves a little retail therapy. Oh, shopping at Zara which has become a traveling tradition – visit Zara in every country (if possible)
Two Perspectives, One Beautiful Destination
What I love most about El Salvador is how it offers something for every kind of traveler.
Whether you’re like me—someone who seeks adventure, exploration, and movement—or you’re like my friend—someone who prefers relaxation, slow travel, and soaking in the beauty of a place—El Salvador delivers.
What We Both Agreed On
El Salvador is stunning. From volcanic landscapes to beachside sunsets, the country is full of natural beauty.
The locals are warm and welcoming. No matter where we went, we felt a genuine kindness from the people.
The food is incredible. Pupusas, fresh seafood, and drinks? Enough said.
We’d both go back in a heartbeat.
El Salvador isn’t just one kind of destination—it’s a place that meets you where you are. Whether you come seeking adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, it’s waiting to be experienced on your terms.
