Visiting Puerto Vallarta in the near future?
You should know entry rules are changing when traveling to the ultra-popular beach hotspot in Mexico in 2025, and if you think a valid passport will suffice to grant you entry, you have another thing coming.
Soon enough, Puerto Vallarta will slap an entry fee requirement on all foreign passengers, including Americans: in other words, unless you accept paying the required amount, you might be encouraged to vacation elsewhere.
This comes on the heels of similar requirements enacted in the United Kingdom and the European Union:
Americans Will Have To Pay A New Fee To Fly To Puerto Vallarta From Now On
As stated by Jalisco authorities, which govern Puerto Vallarta, Americans will have to pay a mandatory fee upon landing in the trendy resort city after the Jalisco State Congress approved an initiative to levy a new tax on incoming tourists.
But why are they doing this? When will implementation take place, and how, and most importantly, how much is the tax?
You Have To Pay The Same Fee Regardless Of How Long You’re Staying
To answer the first part of the (long) question, it’s been reported that the tax aims to generate ‘additional revenue’ for municipal development––in other words, Americans, Canadians, and other foreigners will (indirectly) contribute to infrastructure improvements in PV.
The fee will apply regardless of the length of stay, whether you’re only in Puerto Vallarta for the long weekend, or the entire week, and it will be collected either in advance, by means of an online portal, or as part of the arrival process.
The designated platform will be launching soon, so tourists will be able to pay the fee prior to flying:
This Is How Payment Will Work
It’s not clear whether check-in staff at their point of departure will enforce the rule, but upon landing, they’ll have to show proof of payment to border officers to be let through the door.
Alternatively, new arrivals will be able to be directed to payment counters when landing at Puerto Vallarta International (PVR), where on-the-ground personnel will ‘facilitate’ the process.
It’s worth noting that this is not a digital visa nor an Electronic Travel Authorization, despite being just as mandatory:
Americans can continue flying to the Jalisco resort hassle-free, without having to apply for a mandatory permit in advance, yet they will only be allowed access to Puerto Vallarta by either showing proof of advance payment of the tourist tax, or by paying it on the spot.
Cruise arrivals are not exempt, either:
Payment of the tax will be enforced by Puerto Vallarta’s Integral Port Administration (API) at the main cruise port, and guests will only be allowed to disembark should they shell out the dough.
Now, for the part you’ve all been (impatiently) waiting for: how much is the fee?
This Is How Much The Puerto Vallarta Tourist Tax Will Cost
That’s the good news:
New entry requirements to our favorite destinations are never enticing prospects, but in Puerto Vallarta, the tourist tax is only 141 Mexican pesos, or roughly US$7 per person.
It’s also been confirmed it’s a ‘one-time’ fee, so if we understood it correctly, you wouldn’t have to pay it again should you return to PV at a later date.
Don’t ask us how they’ll know who’s been taxed already or not––maybe they’ll add a little annotation under your stored passport data? Maybe you’ll have to save the payment receipt to your phone so you have it handy every time you fly into PV?
Who knows!
Online or at the airport or port, payments can be made in:
- Cash (American dollars or Mexican pesos)
- Credit or debit cards
As for the implementation date, it is expected that the measure will take effect within a month following its publication in the Official Gazette of the State of Jalisco, at some point in March 2025.
So far, authorities have not informed media outlets if tourists flying into PV from other Mexican destinations, such as Mexico City, will remain subject to paying the fee.
We’ll keep you updated once the system goes live, and once we know more details.
