HUSKY SLEDDING FINLAND EXPERIENCE
INTRODUCTION TO SAWO HUSKY
Located in Lempyy, in the heart of the Savo region of Southeast Finland, Sawo Husky offers day and night husky safaris since 2014.
You can either drive the sled yourself, or sit back and relax (like we did) and enjoy the ride with an experienced guide.
And what an amazing guide we had! Laura Kääriäinen has been working with Siberian Huskies since 2008 and is thé expert when it comes to dogsledding. She competes in middle-distance dog sledding competitions and is responsible for the care and training of the 37 dogs at Sawo Husky.
THE HUSKY RIDE EXPERIENCE
I was so happy Laura was me and my friend Cora’s driver on our safari, because while super excited, I was also a little nervous about the whole experience.
Luckily, the nerves flew away with the speed of the sled rushing off and I was soon able to soak up the natural beauty of the area, seeing the huskies work together and listening to the beautiful little instructions that Laura gave to the dogs.

After the ride, you get to hang out with the huskies. They are extremely keen on cuddles!
If you are able to stop hugging them at some point, you can warm up in a traditional Finnish hut where over a warm drink and snack the guide tells you more about the dogs’ lives, their training and the general lifestyle working with these unique animals.

What really stood out for me during this bucket list experience was the great care for the well-being of the dogs by the team of Sawo Husky.
This is not an overcrowded tourist attraction at all, instead the dogs get loads of space, different forms of exercise and enough rest every day.
The dogs also retire when needed (yet stay on the property), they get high quality food and even a masseuse and regular checks by a physiotherapist, I’ve been told!
