These Are The 2 Best U.S. Cities For Solo Female Travelers According To New Report

Share The Article

Solo female travel has never been more popular, and it’s easy to see why.

When you travel solo, you have complete freedom and independence to travel anywhere you want and at your own pace.

But where should you go?

A new study by DIPNDIVE looked at the top global cities to work out which were best for solo female travelers in terms of both safety and being budget friendly.

These are the two American cities that appeared on the top ten list of best cities for solo female travelers.

Chicago

The sixth best destination on the list for women traveling solo is Chicago. The city ranked incredibly highly thanks to its affordability as well as its abundance of free attractions.

There are 229 free attractions and experiences you can enjoy in the city, according to the report, so if you’re looking for epic experiences on a shoestring budget Chicago is a great spot.

Some of the best free experiences in the city include the Chicago Cultural Center, the Smart Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography.

Visiting museums and galleries is one of my favorite things to do as a solo female traveler because it means I can explore what interests me most, and at my own pace.

Chicago also boasts one of the only free zoos in the U.S. The Lincoln Park Zoo is home to nearly 200 animal species, including lions, bears, and giraffes, and it is the second oldest zoo in America.

Safety is always one of my main concerns when I travel solo. And at 33.9/100, it’s worth being aware that Chicago scored much lower on the safety index than other countries on this list. (Zagreb scored 78.6 and Singapore scored 77.4, for example).

That doesn’t mean that Chicago isn’t a safe destination to visit as a solo female traveler, but figures like this are good for awareness, and serve as a reminder to consider where you choose to walk alone, especially at night.

On the subject of things to do at night, Chicago has a great nightlife scene. River North is one of the best nightlife spots in the city and is home to an abundance of bars as well as vibrant live music venues.

And if you enjoy shopping, head to the Magnificent Mile. This is located near North Side and is home to over 460 stores covering everything from chain stores to high-end designer goods. So there’s something for every taste and budget here!

New York City

New York City came in 9th place on the list of top ten cities for solo travelers, one of only two American cities to make the cut!

And although the cost of living in New York City is high, there are plenty of free things to see and do. According to the report, there are 630 free activities and attractions in New York City, which is the highest number of any destination on the list.

Some of the best free activities in New York City include exploring Central Park or visiting the New York City Library.

The American Folk Art Museum, The Bronx Museum are free and the Whitney Museum offers free entry to anyone under the age of 25.

And although some of New York’s best-known museums can be pricey, most have certain days or hours when you can enter for free. For example, the 9/11 Museum offers free entry between 5pm and 7.30pm every Monday and the Museum of the Moving Image offers free entry every Thursday between 2pm and 6pm.

If you’re looking for something a little more lighthearted, then the Bronx Zoo also offers free entry every Wednesday.

From a safety perspective, New York City actually has a higher safety index rating than Chicago, scoring 49.2/100. Like most large cities, there are parts of the city that are best avoided at night when traveling solo.

Top tips for solo female travelers include staying in well-lit and well-populated areas at night. My main rule of thumb is to trust my instincts: if a situation doesn’t feel safe then remove yourself from it as soon as possible. In New York City it’s also wise to choose a hotel that’s close to a subway station. This helps to minimize how much walking you’ll have to do in the city at night.
