Wondering where to jet off to this spring? Expedia is jumping in to help.
Releasing their Spring Travel Outlook, this report is jam-packed with goodies, but the international insight stands out the most.
We all know travelers love visiting Hawaii, Disney World, and icons like Los Angeles and Chicago, but where travelers put their passports to use changes from year to year.
This spring, travelers have cast a wide net with the top 3 trending destinations ranging from Asia, up-and-coming Caribbean islands, to a Latin American stalwart ready for a major comeback.
These 3 international destinations are surging in popularity this spring, according to Expedia:
3) Tokyo
The least surprising of the top 3 is Tokyo. I mean, is there ever really a bad time to visit?
However, one enticing aspect of visiting Tokyo this year is there are more nonstop budget flights than ever.
Japan’s ZIPair continues to expand into the U.S., adding Houston to the mix on March 4, 2025.
Expedia reveals Tokyo has seen a 50% increase in bookings for this spring, just in time for the city’s world-renowned Cherry Blossom season.
While any time of year magnetizes you toward the never-ending urban sprawl of neon lights and back-alley izakayas, March and April see Tokyo tickled pink with the sudden bloom of Cherry Blossom trees.
And if that’s the reason for your visit, make sure to hit up Ueno Park with an empty camera roll.
Otherwise, this one-of-a-kind city still holds a never-ending array of world-class eats, lively bars, and unparalleled off-the-wall attractions, whether it be capybara cafes or real-life Mario Kart racing.
2) Curacao
Are travelers really passing on Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and The Bahamas this spring?
Expedia claims Curacao has a 60% surge. What’s often considered a sleepy island, Curacao is actually breaking tourism records, so why the newfound hype?
Well, numerous reports have claimed travelers are seeking new experiences away from both the hustle and bustle of major cities and overly touristy beach towns.
Curacao may be seeking a record number of visitors, but the aesthetics of unspoiled beaches and seemingly yet-to-be-discovered vibrant towns are drawing in more vacationers over, say, the typical inauthentic retreat you’d have in Montego Bay.
Here, you’ll find laid-back fishing villages, pristine white sand beaches along turquoise waters, and resorts that haven’t yet reached the point of being too “American-ized”, let’s say.
Be honest. Would you rather visit downtown Cancun and Punta Cana with obnoxious nightlife and overpriced trinkets, or bear witness to the charm and history of Willemstad’s colorful townscape?
The proof is in the pictures. Curacao’s capital is among the prettiest in the Caribbean and a delight to explore beyond the beach, which certainly can’t be said for other major Caribbean getaways.
1) Rio de Janeiro
Travelers’ first thoughts when planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro might be, “is it safe?”, and rightfully so.
There have been multiple reports in recent years claiming Rio isn’t a picture-perfect Copacabana postcard.
Despite the rough reputation, Rio has piqued travelers’ interest the most this spring, seeing a whopping 85% spike in accommodation searches.
While certainly a global icon, Rio is notoriously riddled with crime to the point the U.S. Embassy and State Department have differing viewpoints right now.
The State Department hasn’t updated Brazil’s current Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory since October 2023, while the U.S. Embassy just released a new security alert this month warning of crime upticks during Carnival as well as common dating scams leading to robberies.
As it stands, the State Department’s only mention of Rio is to urge travelers from visiting the city’s notorious favelas, some of the poorest neighborhoods in Latin America.
Regardless, the truth is a majority of tourists make it back home unscathed with nothing but lifelong memories made.
Rio is home to stunningly beautiful beaches, and not just world-famous Copacabana. Hotels are incredibly affordable, where it’s common to score luxury stays under $50 per night.
For those wanting to partake in Carnival festivities, there’s no better place than Rio. The party starts February. 28th and doesn’t end until March 8th.
