There is magic in Prague during the Advent period. Not sure what it’s the secret of this city, but I truly believe that is one of the most fascinating places to visit for the Christmas festivities. As soon as one walks the small alleys leading to the iconic Old Town Square, the towers of Our Lady before Týn appears surrounded by sparkling Christmas illuminations and it’s immediately magic. Among the many Christmas markets I visited during the past 10 years, Prague certainly stands among the top three cities. In this blog, I will give you all the essential information about Prague Christmas markets, to help you organising your perfect festive getaway!
If this is your first time in Prague, I recommend adding to your reads my First timers guide to the city here. This is a must-have guide to make the most from your visit!
Why Prague should be on your Christmas Markets’ radar
I discovered that despite being quite popular as place to visit, Prague still fall a little behinds some more famous destinations when it comes to Christmas Markets. Indeed, places such as Vienna, Frankfurt and Bruges are always on top of the most visited destinations during the festive period. Maybe because Czech Republic tend to be a little colder than other Europeans counterparts or because Germany has always been the queen of European Christmas. This doesn’t mean that Prague is not crowded during the festive period, but is not as crazy crowded as Vienna or Nurenberg (I am thinking the most crowded Christmas Markets I’ve visited here!).
Therefore, if you are still thinking about your next festive giveaway and want to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world during the most magical period of the year, this is your sign to go! Prague should be definitely on your radar not only for the lovely Christmas Markets, but also for the many incredible sights you can add on top of your visit.
Czech Christmas Traditions
Did I tell you that Czech Republic has some kind of unique Christmas traditions? A few years ago, I was on assignment for Visit Czech Republic and in occasion of my festive visited, I decided to research and write about 6 of the best Czech folklore traditions that visitors can experience during the Christmas period. These go from street angels parades to gifting ginger bread biscuits, make walnut floating and bathing carps (???).
I don’t want to spoiler you too much but if you are visiting and want to be prepared to witness a few unusual and quite special tradition, read my detailed article here!
Essential information for your Christmas trip to Prague
When is the best festive period to visit Prague?
Festive season in Prague usually starts in late November. However, one of the best week to visit is that happening between the 4-5 December. Indeed, during that week one can see live many of the Czech Folklore traditions including the Angel Parade, Santa Klaus around the city etc. It’s a very special week to be in Prague and I’m glad I was able to experience it.
How many days I need to visit Prague Christmas Markets?
There is not a huge number of Christmas Markets in Prague and I would say that 2 days are good to visit them all. However, if visiting also the city and its landmarks, you might want to add some extra time.
Is Prague expensive?
Compared to other European cities during the same period (e.g. Vienna, Paris), Prague is not excessively expensive. Of course this largely depends on the type of holiday one wants to do as in any place there are both affordable and expensive sides. However, I still had the feeling that some things (e.g. food) were still affordable.
Are there any other Christmas Markets worth to visit in Czech Republic?
Czech Republic is full of incredible places. One of my favourite other cities I visited during the Christmas period and that looks out of a fairytale is Český Krumlov. This is a South Bohemian city that is still perfectly preserved and very rich in history.
If you want to discover more about it, you can read my winter guide to Český Krumlov
Getting around Prague
Prague is a very walkable city. I have to say we walked most of the time and used the very reliable public transport only on a few occasions. One of my favourite transportation was the vintage tram. They are quite similar to the ones in Lisbon but a little more modern. Children had so much fun!
Anyway, if you want to avoid lengthy walks, Prague metro/bus and tram system is very efficient. Tickets can be purchased online and they are very affordable.
What to wear in Prague during winter
Prague can be very very cold during winter. When we visited it started even snowing! I remember the wind felt freezing and I was glad to have a warm coat with me. I would recommend wearing warm clothes, bring layers to regulate according to the temperature and don’t forget hats and gloves. Wearing some waterproof shoes helps keeping your feet warm in case of snow. For all the rest, there is mulled wine!
Prague best Christmas Markets
Prague has traditionally two main Christmas Markets. One in Old Town Square and another one in Wenceslas Square. However, during the last years a few other smaller markets are open around the city. These usually feature local crafts and art and their opening times are slightly different because organised independently from the two main markets. Below you will find information on all of them and a practical map to see where they will be located.
Prague Old Town Square Christmas Market – Staroměstské náměstí
This is probably the most beautiful and famous market not only in Prague but in the entire Czech Republic. Set in the background of the iconic Astronomical tower and Our Lady before Týn Church, this market is enclosed within the beautiful historical square. It features several food stalls, the unmissable mulled wine, Christmas decorations and the beautiful Christmas Tree.

The Prague Christmas Market in Old Town Square will start on 29th November 2025 and terminate on 6th January 2026. Stalls will be open from 10 am to 10 pm.
Prague Wenceslas Square Christmas Market – Václavské náměstí
The Wenceslas Square Christmas Market is slightly different from the Old Square Market one. Indeed, this has more of a traditional feeling with several stalls selling handcrafted goods and traditional ornaments made of glass, straw, ceramics, wood etc. Here you can find also the famous gingerbread biscuits that are an essential part of the Czech folklore. Food stalls serving mulled wine and traditional food are also available in this market.

Our stay at Miss Sophie’s Charles Bridge was perfect because all the apartments are thought for families and we had all the necessary for us and the kids. Moreover, the apartment design is very charming and I loved the buffet breakfast served every morning in front of the room. If you are a family travelling or a group, this is the place for you! In addition, this place is literally at two-minutes from Charles Bridge.
