SunBreeze Hotel Review: Beachfront Stay In San Pedro, Belize

Hosted by Sunbreeze Hotel

If you’re looking for a centrally located, family-friendly hotel in San Pedro, Belize, with waterfront views and affordable prices, then SunBreeze Hotel might just be your perfect home base.

During our summer trip to Belize, we spent four nights at this mid-range hotel (as guests) and were pleasantly surprised by just how much value and serenity it offered — especially considering its prime location in the heart of town.

Whether you’re looking for a base between scuba diving and snorkeling trips, a jumping-off point to explore Ambergris Caye and the Belize Barrier Reef, or just somewhere affordable to stay – SunBreeze is a top choice.

Here’s what we liked about staying at the SunBreeze Hotel in San Pedro, Belize.

Location: Waterfront convenience in San Pedro Town

Like us, you’re probably looking for a location when choosing a hotel – one that is an easy walking distance to attractions and amenities – extra bonus if it has a view.

The SunBreeze Hotel is checking off both of those with its position right on the waterfront with its just a few minutes’ walk from the entertainment of San Pedro, it’s main shops, tour operators, beach bars, and restaurants.

That meant we could easily stroll to dinner or grab a coffee, without the hassle of needing a golf cart or taxi. We appreciated not feeling isolated from the action, but also not being in the thick of the party scene. For families, that balance is gold.

Being oceanfront, the hotel also offered breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea from several vantage points—including the restaurant, pool area, and the shared deck just outside our room.

You could see out to the reef – evidenced by the crashing waves, and when the skies cleared, the water really showed off its reef personality. The early morning sunrises were also a highlight.

And if you are flying into San Pedro, you’ll be happy to know you can roll your suitcase across the road and through the lobby. It’s the closest airport hotel I’ve ever seen, mere steps away – but don’t worry it’s not going to disturb your peace.

If you are catching the ferry from Belize City, it is a 5-minute walk from the Carribean Sprinter dock, or 15-minute walk from the main ferry terminal – or a 5 min golf cart ride, which should cost you $10.

Sunrise rituals and peaceful mornings

Each morning began with a ritual I came to cherish: stepping out to the waterfront to watch the sunrise over the pristine waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Actually, I was awake an hour before (4:30am doing my morning ritual (meditation journaling) on our porch overlooking the sea and the lush tropical gardens.

Even before the sun crept over the horizon, a staff member was already outside raking the sand in front of the hotel to create a pristine canvas. It was a small detail, but it filled me with awe and gratitude.

I felt kinda bad (but also glad) to be the first to ruin this perfectly smoothed stretch of beach with my footprint! (Smooth stretches of seaweed free sand is not the norm on this side of the island).

Sometimes I watched from the beach, sometimes from the hammocks in the covered open area above the restaurant, and sometimes from the jetty.

You did not get the best views of sunrise as there were boats, piers, boat sheds, and clouds to peer around, but it was good enough for a grounding and peaceful start to the day, with no one else around disturbing it.

Rooms are spacious, breezy, and comfortable

double queen room sunbreeze hotel

We stayed in a Premier Queen Double Room, and it was larger than we expected for a mid-range Caribbean hotel.

The room had two queen beds, a small seating area, work desk, mini refrigerator, safety deposit box, ceiling fan, and strong air-conditioning — but truthfully, we mostly kept the windows open to enjoy the refreshing sea breeze, which flowed beautifully through the property.

What we loved:

  • Large room with space for the whole family
  • Clean, bright design with mahogany furniture paired with white linen
  • Ocean breezes made it feel cooler than the temperature
  • Sink area outside the bathroom, which made it easier for us all to get ready when someone was showering (family travel problems)
  • Daily filtered water jug refill from housekeeping (a huge plus!)
  • A small seating area outside on the balcony and a nearby area with hammocks (Kalyra loved having private time here)

One minor suggestion: while there’s a coffee station set up in the hotel foyer each morning (which we appreciated!), I would have loved to have a coffee maker in the room or to have the station available later in the day.

It closed at 10am and sometimes I need a coffee later, but truly no big deal as we found great coffee nearby.

Amenities: pool, gardens, and handy jetty for tours

Despite being in the center of town, the hotel grounds feel like a tucked-away retreat.

The central courtyard features manicured gardens, swaying palms, a sandy firepit area, and a clean swimming pool where we spent lazy afternoons. Ambergris Caye was made for lazy afternoons.

The beachfront itself isn’t ideal for swimming – it’s shallow, busy with boats coming in and out, and often filled with seaweed—but the pool is a lovely alternative.

There’s also a jetty out front of the hotel, which makes things super convenient for snorkeling and diving excursions.

We were picked up right from the dock for our reef snorkeling tour—just a 10-minute boat ride away. The hotel organized the tour for us, and they also offer help booking:

  • Local excursions (Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, Blue Hole)
  • Fishing trips
  • Inter-island flights or airport transfers
  • Restaurant recommendations and reservations

Dining at Blue Water Grill is a must

Attached to the hotel is the famous Blue Water Grill, one of the top-rated restaurants in San Pedro offering Caribbean island cuisine with a twist.

On our last evening, we discovered it really deserves this reputation. It’s slightly pricier than other places to eat in San Pedro but the quality of the food and ambiance can justify it. Save it for that special San Pedro dining experience.

It’s a magnet for both locals and tourists, and after dining there several times, we understood why. The food is fresh, creative, and consistently delicious.

Finally, I could eat Belize’s favorite “jerk” meal – but I had it with locally caught fish of the day in spicy homemade jerk sauce, served with coconut white rice, cinnamon plantains & charred pineapple salsa. Wow! It was not like I was expecting at all – it was spicy, creamy and so flavorful.  And the coconut rice was the best I’ve ever had. I could have eaten a plate just of that.

They regularly also have live music, so check the schedule. We had a late dinner so caught just the last few songs of the band.

Savannah, Craig and I also enjoyed breakfast with an ocean view one morning of cinnamon French toast, huevos rancheros, and a Belizean breakfast with fry jacks. I enjoyed this slow start to the day with the morning sun, a cool breeze and the calm seas as our breakfast view.

Whether you’re here for breakfast, lunch, or a sunset dinner, Blue Water Grill adds serious value to the SunBreeze experience.

Staff and service: friendly, helpful, and flexible

From the front desk to the housekeeping team to the waitstaff at Blue Water Grill, everyone at SunBreeze was warm and accommodating.

On check-in you’re given keys, and beach towels, which they happily exchange for you when needed. You can check your keys in at the lobby every time you go out if you like to ensure they don’t get lost.

Gates to the resort are locked at 10pm, but you can buzz security to get in. Not that I felt unsafe in San Pedro or Belize at all, but that’s an extra layer of security you may appreciate.

Staff happily helped us organize tours, refill our water, and even let us sit in the restaurant early in the morning to sip coffee and do some work while waiting for the kids to wake up.

The front desk can also exchange money for you – we stupidly came to Belize with only US dollars and no way to withdraw money from the ATM. A story of complacency. Thankfully they could exchange our USD. The standard rate in Belize is $2 Belizean for every $1 USD.

The housekeeping team went the extra mile—each day they filled a pitcher of filtered drinking water in our room, which helped us cut down on plastic waste and saved us money on bottled water.

The front lobby also has a large, filtered water station all day and coffee station in the morning.

Family-Friendly and Relaxed Vibe

Though not a full-scale resort, SunBreeze Hotel is ideal for families looking for comfort, affordability, and a bit of peace and quiet.

Our teenage daughters loved the pool, the hammocks, and having space to hang out and read outside our room.

The hotel feels secure and calm, even though you’re steps away from town.

It’s not a party hotel, and it doesn’t try to be. It was very quiet during our stay, despite the restaurant being really busy.

FAQs about visiting SunBreeze Hotel, San Pedro

What is the best time to visit SunBreeze Hotel?

mother and daughter posing in front of sunbreeze hotelSeaweed buildup on the shore

Like many Caribbean beach destinations, San Pedro experiences periodic sargassum seaweed buildup, and this can affect the swimming conditions along the shore. Seaweed season is between March and October.

While the SunBreeze beach area isn’t ideal for swimming, the staff does a great job maintaining the sand in front of the hotel and cleaning up the seaweed.

Plus, most water adventures happen just offshore at the reef.

So don’t let the seaweed deter you, it’s a normal seasonal occurrence, and there’s still plenty to love about this location.

The high season typically falls between December to April, which is when you have the best weather with sunny skies and warm temperatures, but it’s also popular, so there may not be much availability with rooms.

Who is SunBreeze Hotel good for?

It’s a great fit for:

  • Families with kids or teens – although, apart from the pool, not a lot of family amenities but with it being an island located near a reef, do you need them?
  • Couples wanting mid-range comfort
  • Solo travelers looking for walkability and ease
  • Sciba divers and snorkelers spending a lot of time on the reef
  • Groups booking multiple rooms for a dive trip or wedding (we met big groups of older travelers doing this)

Final Thoughts: Why we’d stay again

With its waterfront setting, central location, friendly staff, and attached restaurant, it’s a strong contender for one of the best mid-range hotels in San Pedro, Belize.

We’d absolutely stay here again and would recommend it especially to anyone visiting for snorkeling, diving, or a short San Pedro getaway before heading inland to explore the Belizean jungle. Plan your trip to Ambergris Caye with our guide outlining the best things to do in San Pedro.
