Rangiroa Blue Lagoon Snorkel Tour
This tour was previously arranged with Moana Voyages, prior to leaving home for our vacation.
About Rangiroa
Rangiroa is the largest atoll in French Polynesia and the 2nd largest in the world. It’s 75 kilometers long and 25 kilometers wide. There are two main villages in Rangiroa separated by a pass.
Atoll Definition:
: a coral island consisting of a reef surrounding a lagoon
From the sky, the atoll looks like a huge pearl necklace laid on top of the water. This stunning atoll is considered to be one of the most beautiful natural sites in the world.
The rest of the atoll is mostly uninhabited, but for coconut plantations where copra is cultivated.
{Copra is the dried, white flesh of the coconut from which coconut oil is extracted}.
The Blue Lagoon
The amazing Blue Lagoon is on the western edge of the Rangiroa atoll. From the main town of Avatoru, it takes a good 1 hour by boat to reach.
For those who love natural beauty, amazing beaches, crystal clear water and snorkeling, this tour is for you!
Our Rangiroa Blue Lagoon Snorkel Tour
We booked our tour on our own, with Moana Voyages prior to leaving home. We were definitely glad we did, as these tours book very fast.
If you snooze, you lose and you definitely don’t want to miss this one!
We received an email confirmation that our tour guide and boat would be at the ship’s tender dock at a specific time upon our arrival. Once others joining the tour arrived, we were on our way.
It takes a good one hour by boat to reach the Blue Lagoon. Seas can be choppy, making for a very rough crossing. As you can see in my short video below, our ride was rough and our guide told us this was about average.

The Blue Lagoon
After our exciting 1 hour boat ride, we anchored just outside the lagoon to enjoy some snorkeling in the crystal clear warm waters.
Snorkeling in the warm shallow waters, we were surrounded by friendly blacktip sharks, stingrays and beautiful colorful tropical fish.
An amazing experience to swim and snorkel among these incredible creatures of the deep.
After spending plenty of time for everyone, swimming and snorkeling around, it was time to move the boat inside the lagoon.
A Tropical Paradise
When we landed ashore inside the lagoon, it was like witnessing a real tropical paradise. Something none of us had ever experienced before.
The surrounding beauty of the Blue Lagoon was stunning!
It definitely made the choppy boat crossing worthwhile, to experience this incredible site.
After our guide took us on a short walking exploration of the atoll, it was time to enjoy a nice Polynesian style buffet. There’s plenty to eat for everyone, including:
Fresh raw fish salad;
BBQ chicken;
Rice;
Coconut bread.
After a superb lunch, it was to just relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. Plenty of leisure time to explore, swim and/or just sit back on the beach.

Rangiroa Aquarium
After spending a wonderful time at the lagoon, it was time to endure the long boat ride back towards the main town center, but first with a stop for time to snorkel at the natural aquarium.
This beautiful tiny islet is located just off, from the main town center. It was a great way to finish off our superb day on the water.
If you love the water, swimming and snorkeling in amazing places, you will be hard pressed to find anything as beautiful as Rangiroa’s beautiful Blue Lagoon.
Whether visiting the island itself and/or arriving for the day by cruise ship, then this tour is a great choice!
