Plans unveiled for new development of plush apartments on Southend seafront

Submitted by P + PR Property Developments Ltd, the proposals would see a pair of existing buildings, including a three-apartment building, on Thorpe Esplanade demolished and a “high-quality” development built in its place.

Southend Council is yet to decide on the newly submitted plans, but a precedent for approval exists in the area due to the presence of existing tower blocks and apartment buildings, the developer argues.

Ron Woodley is an Independent councillor for Thorpe and said: “Personally, I think the chances of it being refused are very slim and I have no plans to object to it.

“There are apartment blocks across the road from the site and from reviewing the plans, I can’t see the harm of this proposal.

“While the decision will be up to the planners, I think it would be very difficult for the plans to be refused.

Planning applications are often refused if planners deem them to pose the possibility of transforming the character of an area.

According to P + PR Property Developments Ltd, the application will entail the redevelopment of two existing detached properties and one vacant plot with the aim of improving the character of the seafront.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “The proposal has been carefully designed to make efficient use of this prominent corner site, while addressing key urban design considerations including massing, scale, materials, landscaping, sustainability, and accessibility.

“Thorpe Esplanade is defined by a mix of traditional and modern architecture. Larger mid-rise residential blocks such as Estuary Lodge and Murray House establish a precedent for well-scaled, visually articulated apartment buildings along the seafront.”

“In considering the most appropriate residential mix, the applicant has consulted with local agents, who have identified a growing demand for larger apartments in the area – particularly those suitable for families and downsizers seeking generous living space close to the seafront and transport links,” added the spokesperson for P + PR Property Developments Ltd.
