Don’t want to wait for friends and family members to travel with you? Ready to go it alone? I get it!
I’m a big fan of solo travel.
And as a female traveler who often travels solo, when planning my trips I choose destinations with interesting attractions, rich culture, and great food.
But safety is always at the back of my mind, too. The reality of the world we live in is that it has to be!
Women are statistically more susceptible to harassment, theft, and assault when traveling than male travelers.
Luckily, a new report from iVisa has revealed the five safest destinations for solo female travelers. And the great news is, they’re all great places to visit!
Here’s the top 5 list:
5. Iceland
Iceland scores highly for solo female travelers because women report feeling safe and respected in public spaces.
It has a high safety rating thanks to its high rank on the gender gap index and the global peace index and its overall accessibility.
Outside of how safe you’ll feel, there’s so much to see and do in Iceland.
Now is a great time to visit if you want to see the Northern Lights, and swimming in the Blue Lagoon is a bucket list activity worth visiting for.
The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa located in a lava field 5 km (3.1 mi) from Grindavík, which is in southwest Iceland. The smoothing warm waters are rich in minerals, silica, and algae which are amazing for your skin.
4. Finland
Finland has a long-standing reputation for being both safe and welcoming to solo female travelers.
It regularly tops the chart for being the world’s happiest country, and it ranks highly on the gender gap index, too.
If you visit Finland then head north where you can visit the Lapland region (which is stunningly beautiful, and has so much more to offer than just the chance to see Santa), spot the northern lights, and relax in traditional saunas as snow lays on the ground.
Finland has over 180,000 lakes which are as beautiful in the summer months as they are in the winter, and now is the perfect time to visit to hike in the forests and mountains.
To experience Finland’s urban culture, head to Helsinki. This is a beautiful harbor city that boasts an incredibly high concentration of the country’s museums and cultural hubs.
3. Canada
The only North American country to make this top 5 list is Canada. And the good news is because Canada is so close to the U.S. it’s a great place to start if you’re new to solo female travel.
Despite being a cosmopolitan place with many large cities to explore. Canada has a relatively low crime rate. It is also a friendly and accessible city with a high score for steps taken to protect women in the country.
You can choose Canada for a city break as well as to explore the mountainous scenery and beautiful wildlife. So there’s something for every kind of solo female traveler here.
But even if you do plan a city break, try to spend some time getting closer to nature here: Canada is considered one of the world’s most picturesque countries so you’ll regret not seeing some of its breathtaking landscapes.
Head to Banff National Park, the oldest national park in Canada. Here, you can see huge icy blue lakes, alpine meadows, and snow-capped mountains.
If you’re apprehensive about heading into the wilderness alone, you can book a tour suitable for solo female travelers. TourRadar has some great options.
2. Ireland
Ireland has a well-deserved reputation for being a warm and welcoming destination.
Like Canada, most people in Ireland are English-speaking, making it an incredibly easy place to navigate as a first-time solo female traveler. Ireland ranks highly for the steps it takes to protect women, as well as for its accessibility.
But it’s worth pointing out that pickpocketing is increasingly common, particularly in the busier cities. So keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings.
Ireland has a well-developed public transport system, making getting around relatively straightforward and a vibrant pub culture. There’s nowhere better to relax than by a fireplace with a pint or two.
Make sure you explore the countryside to enjoy the landscapes and seascapes that Ireland is best known for.
The Connemara National Park is particularly beautiful and offers unique scenery you simply can’t find anywhere else.
1. Switzerland
Officially the safest country to visit as a solo female traveler is Switzerland.
Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.
A breathtakingly beautiful country, Switzerland also boasts the remarkably reassuring statistic that only 2% of women have reported experiencing violence from men.
If safety is your primary concern, then there really is nowhere better to be.
I love Switzerland for its excellent trains, which offer incredible views and are a tourist attraction in their own right, as well as for the chocolate and the cheese.
If you want to try the very best fondue that Switzerland has to offer then visit Frau Gerolds Garten in Zurich, where the cheese fondue and selection of dipping breads is exceptional.
Tor Brierley
Tor has been writing for more than 20 years and has visited 25 countries (and counting!) She specializes in European and family travel and never says no to new adventures.
