Where is Neko Harbour?
Neko Harbour is situated on the eastern shore of Andvord Bay in Antarctica, about 11km (7 miles) to the south of the Errera Channel.
Adjacent to the harbour, on the western side, is Paradise Harbour. Paradise Harbour is another favourite destination that is frequently explored while on an Antarctica cruise.
The harbour provides a unique and captivating experience for those fortunate enough to explore its pristine landscapes.
Neko Harbour is renowned for its spectacular glacier, which occasionally calves ice in a dramatic display. If you get to see a glacier calve it is a truly spectacular sight!
The harbour is surrounded by towering peaks, floating sea ice, and thundering glaciers that regularly calve into the sea. The constant movement and flow of the massive glaciers create a dramatic and dynamic landscape.
There is also a beach and a small rocky outcrop here, both of which are top photo spots that offer amazing views of the crumbling glaciers.

History of Neko Harbour
This fascinating inlet in Andvord Bay was discovered by Belgian expedition explorer, Adrien de Gerlache, in the early 20th century. The harbour itself was named after a Scottish whaling ship, the Neko, which operated in the area from 1911 to 1924.
This name symbolises the era of Antarctic exploration and exploitation, primarily focused on the whaling industry, which was prevalent in the early 20th century.
Aside from a whaling history, there are also some remnants of Argentinian exploration in Neko Harbour.
You can see the visible foundations of a former Argentine refuge hut near the shore, which was utilized for just two winters before being deserted. In 1996, the ex-Argentinian refuge hut was taken down and subsequently relocated to the Falkland Islands Museum.
Today, only the foundation remnants remain at the Point, frequently obscured by the common snow cover. So though the site cleared, there is still a piece of history that you can see where in clear weather.

Plant and Animal Life at Neko Harbor
The fauna at Neko Harbour is a testament to the rich biodiversity that thrives in the extreme conditions of Antarctica.
This remote inlet on the Antarctic Peninsula is not only a visually stunning location but also a vital habitat for a variety of wildlife, particularly bird species, marine mammals, and Antarctic mosses. You will take it all in when you get to the landing site on the beach!
Fauna
Neko Harbour is most famously known for its penguin population. The area is home to more than 250 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins. You will hear them and smell them before you see them!
These charismatic birds are a major attraction, known for their distinctive orange beaks and loud calls.
Gentoo Penguins are well-adapted to the cold environment and can often be seen nesting on the hills near the beach.

Southern Giant Petrels are also common in Neko Harbour. They play an important role in the ecosystem as scavengers, and they have a massive wingspan. You can even see some Kelp Gulls or South Polar Skuas taking to the skies as well.
The shores of Neko Harbour are often used by Weddell seals as a resting place. These seals are easily recognisable by their spotted coat and are known for their docile nature. We were lucky to spot some Leopard Seals there too, which was amazing.
The waters around Neko Harbour are frequently visited by humpback whales as well, especially during the summer months. You might even see Minke whales passing which is a treat, as these majestic creatures often feed in the nutrient-rich waters.

Flora
The vegetation in Neko Harbor, like much of Antarctica, is limited but resilient.
It includes around 250 species of lichens, 100 species of mosses, 25-30 liverworts, and approximately 700 terrestrial and aquatic algal species.
The only flowering plants present are the Antarctic hair grass and Antarctic pearlwort, which are native to the northern and western parts of the Antarctic Peninsula.
