If you and your partner travel together, are you doing these 5 things?

5 Tips for Couples Traveling Together

Have you ever traveled with your significant other? If so, you know all too well the joys and challenges that come with exploring the world as a couple. Perhaps you’ve experienced the thrill of discovering new places together, but also the frustration of navigating through unknown territory with your partner.

According to a study conducted by the US Travel Association, 63% of couples believe that traveling together strengthens their relationship. But are you and your partner taking full advantage of this shared experience?

In this article, I will uncover the 5 essential things that every couple should do while traveling together to enhance their relationship and create unforgettable memories. Whether you are a seasoned traveling duo or planning your first trip together, read on to discover how you can make the most out of your adventures with your significant other.

Planning the Trip Together

If you and your partner travel together, are you planning the trip together? Or does one person do all the planning? In our house, I do all the trip planning – and I mean ALL the planning. We both like it that way though, I get to plan my dream trip and he gets to go on an awesome trip with his favorite person (me).

We’ll talk about the trip and what our vision looks like, but for the most part, my partner is easygoing and is happy to just be along for the ride. It works for us because I’m more detail-oriented and I enjoy planning trips (I used to be a Travel Agent) while he doesn’t have as much experience doing so. Find out what is best for your relationship, there’s no wrong way.

Booking Flights & Hotels

Who dishes out the dough and books everything? Do you and your partner split it up or pay for it together? When we were dating, I would book everything, and then we would just split it down the middle. Now that we’re married, I pay for it from our joint account. Depending on your financial situation, relationship “status” and personal preference – how you pay and book flights or hotels may differ.

Talk with your partner about who is going to pay for what and how you are going to pay each other back if that’s the route you go. One of my favorite tools for travel payments is Splitwise – it lets you make a group and each person enters what they paid, and who it gets split with. Perfect for group trips or traveling with a partner.

Enjoy the Same Activities

What type of activities do you enjoy? and your partner? Some people prefer bustling cities while others prefer peaceful nature outdoors. You must take into consideration everyone’s preferences and priorities. My partner and I have similar interests like hiking and camping which makes it easier to plan trips. But we also have different interests that we have to compromise on.

For example, he likes disc golfing when we go to new places – I do not, but I’ll still go with him. I love visiting contemporary and interactive art museums, they’re not his favorite but he will go with me and enjoy spending time with me.

Argue during the Trip

Arguing on a trip with your partner is the worst. Traveling can often be stressful, being on time for your flight or tour, navigating a new country, language barriers, and other random mishaps that pop up. It’s important to stay united and not blame each other, that could lead to an argument. Instead of turning on each other, work out a solution to the problem together and familiarize yourself with tools that can prevent arguments.

  • Splitwise App –  is a free tool for friends and partners to track bills and other shared expenses so that everyone gets paid back.
  • GlobeConvert -easily converts 160+ currencies and 350+ physical units.
  • Lyft/Uber – leave navigating to the locals and use a transportation service.

Explore together during the Trip

Exploring a new area with your partner is fun and exciting. But what if you want to go to a museum and your partner wants to go to the botanical gardens? Do you split up and do your own thing or visit both together? Time is something to consider, if you don’t have enough of it you might consider splitting up for a few hours to see different attractions. Skipping an activity to make time for something your partner wants to do is kind, and can make the trip more enjoyable when you are both happy.
