Housing Australia buys a third of homes ‘off shelf’ from developers

The government has been accused of pushing ordinary buyers out of the market following revelations Housing Australia is buying, rather than building, a third of homes to be delivered under a social and affordable housing program.

Officials administering the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund told a Senate estimates hearing the agency has so far delivered 889 homes to community providers, with 333 of those “turnkey homes” purchased from private developers.
