Historic N.J. glassworks with massive warehouse, 28-acre property sold to developer

Salem Glassworks, a defunct major industrial property, was recently purchased by a real estate developer who plans to bring manufacturing back to the site.

Orlando Perdomo of Perdomo Worldwide purchased the more than 28-acre property and more than 500,000-square-foot warehouse at 83 Griffith St. in Salem, according to Max Spann of Max Spann Real Estate and Auction Company.

Perdomo posted on Facebook about the purchase, mentioning his interest in reviving manufacturing in Salem County.

“After roughly a year of looking at the opportunity to invest in South Jersey to bring back manufacturing as well as the opportunity for mixed-use residential developments, Perdomo Worldwide has entered into contract to purchase over 500,000 square feet of warehousing on this Salem site,” Perdomo posted.

The site includes warehouse and manufacturing buildings, according to Max Spann of Max Spann Real Estate and Auction Company.

The purchase was completed in January. The price was not disclosed.

The property, which served as Salem Glass Works headquarters for over 150 years, has been vacant for years. It once served as a major employer for the state.

The plant operated as Salem Glass Works from 1895 to 1934, making it a major local employer and a key part of South Jersey’s glassmaking tradition.

It later became Anchor Cap and Closure Corp. from 1934-1938, then Anchor Hocking Glass from 1938-1983, and eventually Anchor Glass 1983-2012, before being sold to Ardagh Group.

The glass plant closed in 2014, records show.

The site features industrial infrastructure including a rail spur, making it suitable for manufacturing and distribution operations.

The city, designated as an opportunity zone, offers tax benefits and incentives to investors and businesses developing in the area.
