Govt Begins Crackdown on Property Developers

The Mombasa County Government has directed property developers in the coastal city to comply with building approval conditions outlined in their permits or face the revocation of their permits.

In a notice published in one of the local dailies, Mohamed Hussein Mohamed, the County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Urban Planning, and Housing, directed the developers to ensure they notify the county government of the commencement of development.

Additionally, the developers have been directed to ensure they erect site boards and ensure all the safety protocols are taken into consideration.

Further, the CEC warned the developers that failure to adhere to the directives would lead to the revocation of their construction permits.

”Take notice that all the developers of approved constructions are required to adhere strictly to the conditions of approval as provided in the construction permits; more so, the requirement to notify the county government of the commencement of development,” the notice read in part.

”Failure to observe one or more conditions of approval shall lead to suspension and/or revocation of the construction permit as per the provision of the law.”

On Monday, the CEC instructed all landlords and property managers to paint their buildings within 90 days or face legal action.

Further, the property owners were directed to clean, paint, and refurbish their buildings to meet acceptable standards.

Mombasa County also directed landlords to ensure their buildings are painted in Bermuda Blue and White exterior colours, in line with the conditions of approval for their buildings and the Countywide Executive Order 2018.

The notices by the government of Mombasa come against the backdrop of recent incidents where buildings have crumbled in the past over failure to meet safety standards during construction.

On Wednesday last week, tension gripped residents of Mombasa near Coast General Hospital after cracks appeared in a residential building, sparking fears of collapse.

Occupants of the 11-storey structure were forced to evacuate as concerns grew over the potential disaster following heavy rains that have pounded the region over the last few weeks.
