Cuba Will Require All Travelers To Have An Electronic Visa Starting July 1

Share The Article

It’s the end of an era, you guys: starting July 1, you will no longer have to request a pink card flying from the United States to Cuba.

It’s not like the small Caribbean nation is doing away with visas, either, but from this summer, you will be able to apply for an electronic visa, or e-Visa, from the comfort of your home:

No more buying the paper version of the entry permit at the airport or through a licensed travel agency.

The new e-Visa looks set to simplify entry procedures for all travelers arriving in Cuba, regardless of nationality or point of departure. This includes Americans arriving directly from the United States:

Cuban e-Visa Launching This Summer!

As confirmed by MINTUR, the Cuban Ministry of Tourism will roll out the Cuban e-Visa worldwide on July 1, 2025.

Through an official statement on their Facebook page, they finally unveiled new details about the revamped border rules, which will drastically reduce bureaucracy for U.S. citizens. There are even fee waivers in place for Canadian arrivals (more on that soon).

Essentially, all you need to know is that, beginning in summer, you will no longer have to purchase a pink tourist card flying to Cuba from the States, nor its international version, the green card, arriving from the rest of the world.

You know, that small paper slip perforated in the middle, airlines like American Airlines and JetBlue sell at check-in for around $50-100, depending on the provider?

The border guards would usually tear off half of the ticket at border control, and as for the remaining half, you would need to guard it with your life until you left Cuba.

Yeah, we know, far too expensive, and too much hassle just to travel to a Caribbean country when you could simply go to a visa-free Cancun instead.

Well, that’s gone: like every foreign traveler touching down in Cuba, U.S. passport holders will automatically become eligible for e-Visas once they launch.

These can be obtained in advance online, which means you will no longer have to arrive (much) earlier at the airport to purchase a tourist card before your gate closes.

How To Apply For A Cuban e-Visa In 2025

A Cuban e-Visa is requested through a digital platform (already available here), and delivered straight to your email following completion of a simplified process and the payment of a fee.

In order to apply, you will need the following:

  • A valid biometric passport that is not due to expire during your Cuba stay
  • A valid email

That’s it.

If you fly to Cuba from the States and apply yourself, not through an agency, you will be required to send the Cuban Consulate in Washington, whose address is provided at the time of application, a money order for $50 via USPS.

Unfortunately, you cannot pay for the e-Visa with a credit card at this point.

However, if you’re applying from a country like Spain or France, not only is it cheaper ($25), but you may opt for a bank transfer or, if you still have one lying around in your office, a check certified by your bank.

Cuban authorities have promised to issue responses within 72 business hours. If the e-Visa is anything like the soon-to-be-discontinued tourist cards, it is valid for a single entry into Cuba.

What About That Canada Fee Waiver?

Now, if you’re flying to Cuba from Canada, using Canada-based airlines, the e-Visa fee is already included in the flight ticket, and there is no need to get an e-Visa at all!

How cool?

The one big downer is that the D’Viajeros form, a customs form that must be completed in the week before your flight, must still be presented. This is valid for both U.S. and Canadian citizens and any other tourists, regardless of nationality.

You can find the official link here, and remember, this is a different form than that of the e-Visa: in practicality, you will need to submit two forms.

The difference is that D’Viajeros requires no payment, though it is equally mandatory.

With a Cuban e-Visa, you have one year from the date of issuance to enter the country. It generally allows for a stay of up to 90 days, extendable for an additional 90 from within Cuba.

Under the pink card program, Americans could stay in Cuba for 30 days, and renew it for a further 30.
