Commercial developments may come under housing ministry under amended law, say Nga

PETALIING JAYA: Amendments may be made to the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Act 1966 for enforcement on problematic commercial projects to come under the Housing and Local Government Ministry, says Nga Kor Ming.

The Housing and Local Government Minister revealed in Parliament that as of April 2025, a total of 109 property developers had been blacklisted but only for housing projects as commercial developments are not under the ministry’s jurisdiction.

“Therefore, the proposed amendments will enable more comprehensive enforcement, including blacklisting the board of directors of parent companies, subsidiaries as well as the actual beneficial owners of the developer companies involved,” Nga said.

He said the move to strengthen preventive measures against and ensure long-term solutions to curb problematic housing projects that often end up abandoned.

“The ministry will not compromise with developers who fail to fulfil their responsibilities and burden the people,” he said.

As of June 30, the ministry’s Special Task Force on Sick and Abandoned Private Housing Projects had successfully revived 1,127 abandoned projects, benefiting more than 135,000 house buyers.

“The ministry remains committed to restoring problematic projects to ensure citizens, especially low-income groups, have access to comfortable, safe and liveable housing.

“At the same time, errant developers must face the necessary consequences,” Nga said.
