Captain Kate McCue, the beloved captain of Celebrity Cruises, announced on Instagram that she’s leaving after 22 amazing years with the Royal Caribbean Group.
Captain Kate made history as the first American woman to captain a mega cruise ship. In her farewell message, she expressed gratitude for her career, which included moving from second officer to captain and sailing on 11 different ships.
In her Instagram post, Captain Kate talked about the beautiful places she’s seen, the wonderful people she’s met, and living out her childhood dream. She also shared a special video full of memories and moments from her journey.

Captain Kate explained that some recent changes in her life have made her rethink what’s important, leading to her decision to leave Celebrity Cruises. But she’s definitely not leaving sailing behind. As she said herself, “I’ve got too much salt in my veins to leave the sea behind.”
We had the chance to meet Captain Kate during our Celebrity Beyond cruise. She was so friendly and welcoming, making time to meet guests and chat. She’ll definitely be missed.
Captain Kate didn’t say exactly what she’s planning next, but she hinted at new adventures coming up, calling it “the start of the Captain’s Log: New Seasons.”
