Metricon CEO Brad Duggan said the company’s performance this year represented its first year of growth in site starts since 2019/2020, “signalling renewed momentum in what has been a highly challenging market”.

“To achieve ten consecutive years as Australia’s number one builder is an extraordinary milestone — one that speaks to our unwavering commitment to quality, affordability, and customer trust,” Mr Duggan said.

“Over the past decade, 48,000 Australians have chosen Metricon to build their home, significantly more than any other builder, and that trust is the foundation of our business.”

Collectively, the 100 ranked builders delivered 64,407 homes throughout the year, an 11% increase from the previous year’s 58,011.

Metricon also topped the detached home builders category, with 3699 starts. Detached starts as a whole grew 4.5% to a total of 46,944.

AHB Group and SOHO Living, which designs and builds townhomes, led semi-detached dwelling builders with 506 starts, while the category overall jumped 24% to 6443.

AHB Group founder and director Pasquale Garofalo said the company’s strategy, spanning brands from Sheridon Homes and Marque Homes to Royston Homes and Hattan, has centred on being agile to meet the needs of various homebuyers.

“From families seeking value and flexibility, to downsizers looking for comfort without compromise, we’re designing for real life,” he said.

“This result is proof of what happens when good design, affordability, and location come together.”

In the multi-unit category, Meriton Apartments took first place, with starts surging 40% nationally to 11,020.

Under the biggest movers category, which looks at the builders who increased their starts by 200 or more, Parkview Constructions recorded the largest growth, rising 1403 starts (up 131% from the previous year).

Coronation Property ranked second with 1097 additional starts (+161%), and Mirvac came in third with 975 more starts (+524%).

HIA chief economist Tim Reardon said these results are “cause for optimism” with growth across all categories.

“These results reinforce that Australia’s largest builders are ready to lead the next phase of housing growth,” Mr Reardon said.

Mr Reardon also noted that interest rate cuts, strong population growth, and easing construction costs are expected to support building activity.

“Detached starts are forecast to lift steadily to a 2027 peak, while multi-unit commencements are set for an even stronger recovery,” he said.

“Australia’s largest builders have shown once again that they are resilient, capable, and ready to deliver the homes our growing population needs.”
