CEBU CITY — A realtor of one of the country’s largest real estate brands has urged property developers to construct buildings that can withstand powerful earthquakes, saying stronger structures are the best way to protect lives and communities.
Anthony Gerard Leuterio, founder of Filipino Homes, made the appeal during the National Real Estate Convention 2025 on Sunday.
He said earthquakes are natural occurrences that cannot be stopped, but developers can help reduce damage by adopting stronger designs.
“You cannot stop nature,” Leuterio said. “What we can do is make our buildings earthquake-resistant, meaning as high as 8.5 intensity.”
He said Japan serves as an example of how innovation and preparedness make a country more resilient and “remains number one in terms of economy and buildings.”

Meanwhile, Leuterio said the real estate market in Cebu remains active despite the recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the province.
“In fact, there was a spike of interest of buying properties after one week,” he said.

He added that his partner developers immediately respond when houses are damaged, taking action to address issues and repair affected homes.
He said all his partner developers are responsible and ensure problems with housing units are promptly fixed.

The Provincial Veterinary Office recorded P187.6 million in agricultural and livestock losses. Roads and bridges in several towns also sustained heavy damage.
Leuterio said developers should learn from these incidents and ensure their projects can endure strong tremors. He said building earthquake-resistant homes and buildings is key to resilience and recovery.
