A Tea Lover’s Paradise: Ceylon Tea Trails

Sri Lanka is an island blessed with a tropical climate. While the coast is hot and sunny, the hill country of the isle has pleasantly cool weather and a bit of sunshine. This makes the hill country perfect for tea plantations. Sir Thomas Lipton first identified this in the 1800s and since then, the tea business has been thriving. Here are some of the best places to visit for a dose of Ceylon Tea Culture.

Nuwara Eliya

With its misty surroundings and cool weather, Nuwara Eliya is affectionately known as “Little England”. This also makes it the perfect climate for producing the highest quality tea. Visit Pedro Tea Estate and Labookellie Tea Estate for breathtaking views and a look at the tea production process.

Kandy

Hotels in Kandy, the likes of Earl’s Regency Kandy recommend a visit to the Kandy Tea Museum which is situated in the residence of a former tea planter. Furthermore, the Mackwoods Tea Museum also provides great insights into the history of tea production in Sri Lanka.

Yet another popular tourist destination in the hills, particularly among hikers, Ella offers cold weather, challenging hiking trails, and of course, tea! Halpewatte Tea Plantation is the best place to explore, learn more about tea production, and even taste some interesting blends while enjoying stunning views.

Ratnapura

This part of the island is famous for its gem mining industry, the city’s tea culture however is lesser known. Nonetheless, visiting tea estates like Poronuwa Estate surrounded by beautiful views is worth a visit!
