Punta Cana may be putting a small dent in Cancun’s tourism numbers, but millions of American travelers will be flocking to Cancun from now until the end of the year.
Many vacationers like to have their itineraries down pat from the get-go. Once you clear customs, you either want to spot your last name on a cheaply made sign or know the ins and outs of local taxis or rideshares.
Well, the latter has been a sore subject all across Mexico, and especially Cancun, where there’s really no such thing as a slow tourist season.
Impacting both taxi operators and Uber drivers’ wallets, there’s been a constant back-and-forth squabble for years, leaving tourists questioning the safety of these transit methods.
Is it safe to hop in an Uber with well-documented violent attacks from taxi drivers? Furthermore, is it safe to ride with taxi drivers who may have been involved in violent attacks?
Worry no more. Cancun travelers can now skip both taxis and Ubers with a safe $7 airport shuttle bussing passengers to the Hotel Zone.
$7 Well Spent
While taxi and Uber drivers continue to spat, whether publicly or behind closed doors, the Mexican government is making moves to combat the ongoing feud by working in tandem with Grupo Asur and Autobuses de Oriente (ADO).
Governor Mara Lezama recently announced this new initiative to provide travelers peace of mind. While ‘there’s no dollar sign on a peace of mind’, $7 should do the trick, right?
Unless you’re hopping aboard the Maya Train, then you’re likely headed to Cancun’s bustling Hotel Zone, lined with every resort imaginable.
“This service will greatly facilitate the movement of our visitors and residents, offering a reliable and comfortable connection between the airport and the heart of our Hotel Zone”.
Governor of Mexico, Mara Lezama
Not only have attacks between taxis and Ubers caused tourists to question the safety of rides, but there have also been reports of inflated fares.
The flat $7 ticket price puts the kibosh on that as well, making it a win-win for all travelers — and maybe, just maybe, a step in the right direction for level heads to prevail in what seems to be a never-ending turf war.
Shuttle Departures & Scheduling
Wanna know something embarrassing? I’ve visited 14 destinations in Mexico, lived in two U.S. border cities and can barely order Tajín-rimmed margaritas.
So, if you’re like me and feel like a lost puppy trying to navigate every Mexican airport I land at, you’re probably wondering where you can find this new shuttle upon landing.
No worries. I got you.
The Cancun Sun reports the following key information to ensure you can snag a $7 seat on the shuttle:
- ADO’s shuttle will service all terminals (specifically terminals 2, 3, and 4)
- The Hotel Zone is a central stopping point
- Plaza Fiesta is the final stop on the route
Schedule times:
- 11:05 AM
- 1:05 PM
- 3:05 PM
- 5:05 PM
- 7:05 PM (final departure)
This brings into question one key loophole taxis will surely love and that travelers need to keep a keen eye on to avoid predatory tactics.
Say you take a red-eye. Do you really want to wait around until 11:05am groggy-eyed? Or what if you land even at a reasonable time, say 7:30pm?
Obviously, you’re not going to stay overnight at an airport hotel just to take a cheap shuttle, which leaves potentially scammy taxi drivers licking their chops.
Where To Buy Tickets
According to Riviera Maya News, ADO’s new shuttle has already passed regulatory inspections with flying colors.
As such, tickets are already on sale (with limitations).
If you’re going to the Hotel Zone, surely to be the most popular stop, then you can go ahead and buy tickets online. The same goes for rides to Plaza Fiesta, the final stop.
The shuttle is expected to be a very popular method to reach many resorts, so you’ll want to book ahead of time to ensure you get a seat.
