Napa Valley is one of the most renowned wine destinations in the world. As such, prices are often driven up given high demand.
All it takes is a little bit of digging to discover California is teeming with wineries from San Diego to the Oregon border.
Napa may be a huge draw, but sleeping on the rest of California’s gems brimming with world-class wineries and picturesque vineyards is a disservice to your wallet and overall experience.
Whether it’s up-and-coming Murrieta, the historic mining town of Julian, or often overlooked Lodi, there’s no shortage of wino weekends ahead.
But there’s one trending town along California’s Central Coast that’s been highlighted as California’s top wine getaway for 2025.
Welcome to Paso Robles.
“Paso” Is California’s Most Underrated Wine Getaway
Set at about the midway point between LA and San Fran, this sprawling region of lush green landscapes and vast vineyards is truly a sight to behold.
How it goes overlooked is anyone’s guess, but don’t let Napa’s hype fool you into thinking that’s your best bet for the ultimate wine getaway.
Paso Robles is an inland town with a charming downtown to peruse local shops, boutique wine tastings, and great farm-to-table eats like top-rated and Michelin-recognized, In Bloom.
Additionally, you could easily pack in a beach day this spring as “Paso” (as locals call it) is only 35 minutes from California’s world-acclaimed coast with delightful beach towns such as Cambria.
Anytime from March to May is an awesome time to visit. You can enjoy patio seating at numerous wineries and restaurants and the option of beach days nearby.
Springtime sees splendid weather, ranging from 68 degrees in March to highs of 80 in May, with few rainy days.
Paso Robles Is Home To 200 Wineries!
Nope. That’s not a typo. “Paso” is home to 200 wineries, so you could come back year after year and barely scratch the surface.
This scenic town of 31,000 residents specializes in a few signature wines and styles, including organic winemaking.
According to the Montecito Journal, Rhône-style blends and zinfandels are capturing visitors’ attention the most, in addition to the sensational food scene.
So, where to start? With 200 wineries to choose from, narrowing them down might seem like a daunting task.
Let’s mix up some perspectives. TripAdvisor gives the nod to Tobin James Cellars as the top winery for 2025.
This rustic saloon-like setup set on 71 acres passes the vibe check from the get-go and only costs $20 per person for a tasting, and best of all, they welcome walk-ins.
Now if we’re trusting experts in the field of wine, Vinovest ranks Adelaida Vineyards as the top winery.
Furthermore, while Winecountry.com doesn’t lay out a specific ranking, their website is arguably the best tool for planning out your trip as you can sort wineries based on their specialities.
For example, if you’re a fan of Malbec and Syrah like myself, you can sort Paso Robles’ extensive list of wineries based on your preferences.
Based on my preferred results, you can me find posted up at the bar with a glass of Syrah in hand at Robert Hall Winery, where they too accept walk-ins and offer tours Thursday to Monday 10 am to 4 pm.
Paso Robles’ Luxe Resorts
Again, you’re not sacrificing luxury by skipping out on Napa. Wineries and resorts go hand in hand and it’s certainly no different in Paso Robles.
However, there are stays for all budgets here. There’s nothing wrong with downsizing to a cozy inn, either.
So, let’s start there and work our way up.
Your best bet for savings this spring is by booking a stay at Wine Country Inn, where recent guests rave about the welcoming hospitality, cleanliness, and surprisingly spacious bedrooms.
Leveling up to 4-star accommodations, there are a lot more options spread across town.
Here are 5 luxurious stays to consider booking for an epic stay this spring:
- Allegretto Vineyard Resort Paso
- CaliPaso Winery & Villa
- Hotel Cheval
- Sirena Vineyard Resort and Winery
- Bellasera Hotel & Suites Paso Robles, Tapestry by Hilton
Fly Into San Luis Obispo (SLO)
Set smack dab between LA and San Francisco, you might think those are the best gateways into Paso.
Think again.
You can fly directly into San Luis Obispo (SLO) with more connections than you might think.
SLO serves some of America’s top hubs, such as Dallas, Denver, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
Only 3 airlines operate out of SLO:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- United Airlines
Upon arrival, Paso Robles is approximately a half-hour drive from the airport.
