However, Fremantle might not be the place for you. If you’re short on time, the following areas are the best places to stay in Perth for specific travellers:

Fremantle: Where to stay in Perth for families
Fremantle is a bustling neighbourhood known for its easy-going lifestyle, arts scene, and heritage buildings.
Its location on the Swan River makes it easy to get to the CBD via the scenic river cruise, which allows you to enjoy spectacular views of the city skyline and the many sailing boats as you cruise down.
There is a focus on clean eating in Fremantle. You will find many eateries and restaurants serving healthy cuisine, a craft brewery, Little Creatures Brewery, serving up local craft beers, and the famous Fremantle Markets are a popular place to be on Fridays – Sundays to shop for local produce and listen to buskets.
One of the most popular things to do in Fremantle is catch the ferry over to Rottnest Island to enjoy a bike ride or see the quokka residents, or learn about Australia’s maritime history at the WA Maritime Museum or WA Shipwrecks Museum.
You can also learn about former convict life at the historic Fremantle Prison, or if you prefer beaches, check out Bathers Beach, or take a short drive north to Cottesloe Beach, one of the prettiest beaches in Perth.

If you’ve been to Perth before, or you prefer the quietness of a wine region and its rolling countryside, the Swan Valley region is just a 30-minute drive outside the CBD and offers restoration and rejuvenation at your luxurious best.
Wine lovers will savour a trip to the renowned Swan Valley wine region, Australia’s oldest wine producing area. With over 180 years of winemaking history under its belt, this is the place to go to sample a crisp chenin blanc, or a warming shiraz or petit verdot.

Some of the most historic wineries to check out are Fiber Vineyard, Mandoon Estate, and Sandalford Wines. Cycle along the famous Swan Valley Wine Cruise, a 32km signposted trail passing by 150 wineries and vineyards.
As well as wineries, you can also visit the Old Young’s Distillery to learn about gin and vodka production, or sample artisan chocolates at Whistler’s Chocolate Co.

Northbridge is a small neighbourhood next to the CBD in downtown Perth.
It’s known as the entertainment district, and is where you will find the best bars and nightclubs for evening entertainment, and world-renowned shopping in the day time.
It’s a lively, gritty suburb, with a handful of attractions. Here you can access Chinatown, go people-watching in Yagan Square, or visit the Perth Cultural Centre or The Perth Mint.
You can also reach Burswood, home to the famous Crown Towers Perth Casino, within a 10-minute drive across the Swan River.
Doubletree by Hilton Perth Northbridge
Built in 2018, Doubletree by Hilton is a fresh, clean and modern 4-star hotel with river views and a high-end design.

Central Business District (CBD): Where to stay in Perth for first time visitors
For first timers to Perth, we recommend staying in the heart of Perth CBD as it puts you within close proximity to the main attractions.
Kings Park, Perth
You can walk over to Kings Park and Botanic Garden, perhaps Perth’s most famous attractions, as well as visit The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA), or cross the river to visit Perth Zoo.
Also within the CBD is Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Jacob’s Ladder (a staircase up to panoramic views of the city), and the Elizabeth Quay Esplanade, known for its shops and eateries.

Getting around Perth
The most popular way to get around Perth is using the city’s free bus network.
In the city center, there’s a free CAT bus that takes you to key areas such as Elizabeth Quay and Kings Park.
The CAT service is separated by colour:
- Blue CAT: Travels north/south between Perth Busport and Kings Park, via Perth Station and Elizabeth Quay.
- Red CAT: Travels east/west between Matagarup Bridge (East Perth) and Outram Street (West Perth), via Perth Station.
- Yellow CAT: Travels between Claisebrook Station (East Perth) and Outram Street (West Perth), via Perth Station.
- Green CAT: Travels between Elizabeth Quay and Leederville Station, via City West.
- Purple CAT: Travels between Elizabeth Quay and UWA, via Kings Park and QEII Medical Centre.
For travel outside the CBD, you can either drive or use ride-share apps such as Uber.
Perth Airport is located outside the city centre. To get from Perth International Airport to the CBD, it’s a 20-minute train ride on the Airport Line to Perth Train Station.

If you’re an international tourist, I recommend staying in the CBD if you only have a couple of days, or Fremantle if you have a week or more.
