Tahiti Food Tours In Moorea, French Polynesia
One of our most favorite things to do when visiting new destinations, is to embark on a cultural food tour. On our visit to the beautiful island of Moorea in French Polynesia, we did just that with …
Tahiti Food Tours
This tour was a full 5 hours, exploring various parts of the island, with superb food tastings along the way.
About Tahiti Food Tours
Founded by owner Heimata Hall, who was born and raised on the island of Moorea. With a strong desire to become a chef, he started his culinary journey studying at the Pacific Culinary Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii.
He apprenticed under internationally recognized and award-winning Chefs. During this period, Heimata was encouraged to mix traditional local cuisine with a modern twist.
Today and with his love of cooking, he now invites visitors to experience local dishes at various hand picked establishments on his unique food tours, both on Moorea and in Papeete, Tahiti.
Moorea Tama`a Street Food Tour
Tama’a means to eat in Tahitian and on this extensive tour, we will be doing just that!
Below, is a look at what we experienced while on our street food tour, along with other visitors from around the world, together with our excellent tour guide.
This is a morning tour and will take up to 5 hours, which includes pick up and drop off of guests joining the tour. Our pick up time was at 8:30 am, with our guide arriving at our hotel in a very clean and comfortable minivan.
After picking up remaining guests at various hotels, it was time to begin our tour, starting at the main ferry terminal located in Vaiare.
Vaiare
A quick stop to lighten our taste with some fresh fruit and baking, from a local vendor. A chance to sample some fresh …
Green mango and delicious juicy pineapple;
Red plum powder {used in various dishes and to spread on fresh fruit};
Homemade Bread fruit chips;
Banana doughnuts.
A great sampler of fruit and baking. It was also a great place to purchase additional items on your own and at great prices.
We stocked up on banana chips and doughnuts for later!
Moorea Lookout Photo Opportunity
Just up the road a short way while making our way to our next stop, is a superb viewpoint for some excellent photos.
A spectacular view of the water and one of the beautiful 5 star resorts located on the island, with private bungalows over the water.
Maharepa
Our next stop was in the district of Maharepa and to a traditional local and quaint Polynesian eatery known as; Moz Cafe.
We were each served with a plate known as Polynesian Tribology.
A sample of …
Raw fish with coconut milk
Chicken and fafa leaf of the paro with coconut mild {Chicken Fafa}
Poe – banana sugar and tapioca starch with fresh coconut milk
All made fresh awaiting our arrival. One party in our group had never tasted raw fish, and he found it absolutely delicious.
This was a great opportunity to sample authentic Polynesian cuisine.
Also located in the same bustling district of Maharepa and after time to browse around the various shops in the area, it was on to our next tasting location.
Snack Didier
Just another local favorite serving traditional Polynesian dishes, this time with an oriental flair. A chance to sample …
Polynesian Chinese special
Chow Mein sandwich in baguette
Chinese raw fish with white vinegar base Ma’a
Tinito pork with soy sauce veggies with 3 layers rice noodles macaroni pasta
and red kidney beans with rice
All very delicious and unique, particularly the chow mein baguette.
Of course, the French are well known for their love of baguettes. A daily staple in their diet and here in French Polynesia as well. It’s hard not to notice someone, carrying a long and freshly made baguette in their hand.
Cooks Bay View Point
Hopping back into the van, we continued our travels around the island, with a quick photo stop at Cooks Bay. The Bay was named after famous British Explorer James Cook, who visited Moorea in the 1700’s.
This is a beautiful, picturesque three kilometer long bay, surrounded by stunning hills. A great spot for those travel memory photographs!
It was then time to push on, stopping at a very popular local take out eatery known as …
Snack Rotui
Apparently, this incredibly popular establishment opens up at 3 am for locals.
One of their very popular items is freshly baked …
Banana sponge cake
Melt in your mouth – delicious!
Together with samplings of Passion and Longan fruit {dragon’s eye}, was another taste of island favorites among locals.
The variety of fresh fruit available on this tropical island is amazing!
Rorotui Juice Fruit Factory
For the final stop on this tour, was a drive to the well-known Rotui juice fruit factory.
This juice processing factory and distillery has been in business on Moorea since 1981. Located just west of Cook’s Bay, this factory has been producing a variety of quality fresh juice and juice liquors for years.
From the bar, we were able sample both alcoholic and non-alcoholic favorites. There’s also a full retail store on site, for purchasing; juices, liquors and gifts.
Another superb stop for island tastings and a chance to purchase items to take home with you as well.
This was a fully escorted small group food tour experience. It’s a great opportunity to experience everyday local favorites on the beautiful island of Moorea.
“During your food tour you will taste and visit authentic local finds that will offer unique flavors where locals like to eat. The food in Tahiti consists of three cultures, Tahitian, Chinese, and French.”
Your tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel and/or elsewhere, food samplings and bottled water.
If you haven’t experienced a food tour in your travels, then I highly recommend taking one when visiting a new destination around the world.
A great way to experience a variety of local dishes and discover those eateries, where the locals go as well.
