Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced a $5 surcharge for additional entrées ordered in the main dining rooms, effective for sailings departing on or after September 26, 2025.
The change wasn’t announced in a press release or on their website. Guests first noticed the fee onboard, with menus showing the new charge in the fine print, and travel agents later received confirmation in their operational updates.
One entrée remains included at no cost, but ordering a second main course (or more) now comes with a $5 charge across the fleet.
The move follows in the footsteps of other cruise lines. MSC Cruises already applies a $5 surcharge for additional entrées on its U.S. sailings, and Carnival Cruise Line has a similar policy once guests order more than two main courses.
Some cruisers view the new policy as a way to reduce food waste. Others aren’t happy, pointing out that entrée portions can be on the smaller side, and that ordering a second plate is sometimes just a way to share with others at the table.
This update is part of a series of recent changes at NCL. The line has rebranded its long-running Free at Sea program as More at Sea, added a $10 no-show fee for specialty dining reservations, and, according to guest reports, no longer automatically delivers printed Freestyle Dailies to cabins the night before. Guests must now request a copy from Guest Services or use the app.
It’s a reminder that cruise dining traditions aren’t quite the same as they once were.
