The world of travel is in a constant state of change, and 2025 has been no exception. For international travelers, staying on top of shifting entry requirements is more crucial than ever. A simple oversight, like not knowing about a new digital authorization or a reinstated visa rule, can derail a trip before it even begins.
Here at Travel Off Path, our mission since 2019 has been to track these changes closely, ensuring our community is always one step ahead. This year has brought a wave of significant updates, from new travel bans to the rollout of mandatory electronic travel authorizations. If you’re planning a trip, here are eight countries that have changed the rules in 2025.
United States
In a major policy shift this June, the United States implemented a new travel ban and heightened restrictions. The proclamation suspends entry for citizens of 12 specific countries, citing national security concerns. Additionally, it places partial restrictions on travel for citizens of seven other nations, impacting various non-immigrant visas. This is a critical development for travelers from the affected regions and a stark reminder of how quickly high-level policy can impact travel plans.
The countries now banned from entering the United States are as follows:
Afghanista, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar (Burma), Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
United Kingdom
The days of visa-free travel to the UK for many nationalities are over. As of early 2025, the country now requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for previously visa-exempt travelers, including those from the United States, Canada, and Australia. The ETA is a digital pre-clearance that must be obtained before traveling. It’s valid for two years and allows for multiple visits, but it’s a mandatory new step that can’t be skipped.
Brazil
After a period of open access, Brazil has brought back its policy of reciprocity. In April, the country officially reinstated the tourist visa requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia. Travelers from these nations can no longer just show up; they must apply for an electronic visa (e-visa) in advance of their trip to enjoy Brazil’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture.
Israel
Joining the growing global trend, Israel launched its mandatory ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) system on January 1, 2025. This new rule applies to visitors from all visa-exempt countries. The goal is to pre-screen travelers and streamline the arrival process, but for the traveler, it means an essential piece of online paperwork must be completed before boarding a flight to Tel Aviv.
Saint Kitts and Nevis
The beautiful Caribbean federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis introduced its own Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system in late May. This digital pre-clearance is now a requirement for all foreign nationals who could previously enter visa-free. It’s a move to modernize its borders and enhance security, making it a pioneer in the CARICOM region for this type of system.
Kenya
Kenya made a bold move this year by implementing a universal Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. This new digital process completely replaced all previous visa categories, aiming to create a single, streamlined path for entry for all foreign visitors. While some exemptions were later made for neighboring African countries, for most international travelers, the eTA is the new, non-negotiable key to entry.
Thailand
While Thailand has had visa-free arrangements for many, it has added a new layer to its entry process. As of May 1, 2025, the country made its Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) mandatory for all foreign nationals. This digital form replaces the old paper arrival/departure cards and must be completed online before you arrive at the immigration counter.
Chad
In a clear example of how diplomatic tensions can instantly impact travel, Chad suspended the issuance of all visas to U.S. citizens in early June. This was a direct reciprocal action taken in response to being included in the new U.S. travel ban. It’s a powerful illustration of how quickly the door to a country can close, highlighting the absolute need for travelers to check the very latest rules before heading to the airport.
The bottom line for travelers in 2025 is that the rules of the game have changed. With countries rapidly launching digital systems and altering visa policies, the quick pre-trip check of entry requirements has become essential.
To avoid any surprises at the airport, the most reliable move is to always check the official embassy or consulate website for your destination before you travel. It’s a simple step that lets you focus on your adventure.
