4) Combo: snorkeling cruise (party boat) and dune buggy adventure

 Another Punta Cana excursion combo makes it into the Top 10 of the best-reviewed tours in Punta Cana. This combination tour package of dune buggies and a party boat* gets a 4.75 out of 5 points and therefore is the second-best tour package in Punta Cana, consisting of at least 3 or more activities.

 The first part is one of the typical Punta Cana dune buggy excursions, leading you through prepared off-road trails with lots of mud and puddles. Be prepared to get wet and dirty. You’ll also visit a couple of places like a typical Dominican ranch where you’ll see how cocoa pods, cinnamon and coffee is harvested and/or dried. In my opinion, those places are a bit touristy as a lot of vendors are approaching you, but if you have never seen local farms or the Dominican fruits and produce, it is worth getting to know those products. You’ll also visit Macao Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Punta Cana. 

 The second part of the tour is a typical Punta Cana party boat as you can read here. Compared to the premium snorkeling excursion presented above, you’ll visit the regular snorkeling spot and might have a catamaran packed with people – which is great if you would like to have a massive party. The booze cruises from Bavaro and Punta Cana are living up to their name and are not without a reason one of the most popular excursions in Punta Cana. However, in my opinion, the name of this tour should be better “Party Boat and Dune Buggy Adventure” instead of “Snorkeling Cruise and Dune Buggy Adventure” as the snorkeling part of this excursion is subpar at maximum.

 Still, you are getting two excursions for the price of one so you can consider this Punta Cana tour if you are traveling Punta Cana on a budget and would like to get more bang for the buck.

The cheapest excursions

While you can find the best excursions in Punta Cana according to the travelers’ ratings above, I understand that you do not always want to spend close to 100 USD or more per person for a single activity. For those who are traveling to Punta Cana on a budget, there are also several tours in Punta Cana available for under 50 USD – kind of low-budget excursions. 

The tours in Punta Cana which are available for under 50 USD are mostly dune buggy adventures, but there are some further recommendable options available. Currently, a countryside safari is available* for 49 USD as well as an authentic village walk with a local guide*, which shows you the local countryside and small hidden villages

Regular visitors to Punta Cana might get bored by the repeating zipline excursions, dune buggy tours, or theme parks in Punta Cana. On the other side, it is sometimes hard to find new things to do in Punta Cana as there is such an incredibly high amount of offers that it is difficult to find new tours in Punta Cana.

For this reason, I have added a few special tours which are quiet new on the market:

El Dorado Water Park (check details and prices here*): the first-ever water park in Punta Cana which is not linked to a resort (opened in May 2024). El Dorado welcomes you with more than 20 activities, among them multiple thrilling slides, a multi-rider vertical funnel attraction, a 600-meter-long lazy river and plenty of pools.

Selfie World Park (check details and prices here*): a new attraction in Punta Cana which just opened recently. Something different, especially for families and photo lovers – take selfies in 3D-inspired paintings and enjoy unique photo opportunities for every age.

Mimosa Cruise (check details and prices here*): just think of bottomless Mimosas, a great vibe and a spacious boat exploring the turquoise waters of Punta Cana – do I need to say more?

Lobster Master Class (check details and prices here*): most resorts in Punta Cana don’t include lobster, so here is your chance to not only eat (a very delicious) one but also prepare one by yourself under the guidance of an experienced and professional chef.

Evening Buggy Tour (check details and prices here*): another tour in Punta Cana which is pretty new for 2024/2025 and which is a great choice as it not only includes the typical buggy trip but also a delicious Dominican dinner, a night visit (with a bit of a party) at a cenote and some traditional dance performances. Highly recommended for a fun night out in Punta Cana.

E-Bike City Tour (check details and prices here*), a perfect way to explore Punta Cana’s busy area around Bavaro, which is not fully walkable. Visit iconic places, see the local life, enjoy the e-bikes and get an authentic glimpse of the real Punta Cana.

The best excursions for nature lovers

 The Dominican Republic is not only famous for its beautiful beaches in Punta Cana and elsewhere in the country, but also for a lot of stunning natural sights. Therefore, you definitely should head on one of the following tours, which are some of the top excursions in Punta Cana for nature lovers. My personal top picks are without a doubt Isla Saona and Los Haitises National Park. 

5) Isla Saona (standard) tour

Personal Note: If you can afford it, I would always recommend the much better premium tour listed above under 1) with VIP services and smaller groups – it is not without a reason that those premium/VIP tours hardly get any complaints.

 Yes, Saona Island is pretty touristy with dozens of tour boats visiting the island every day. But you know what? It is absolutely worth it, as the nature expecting you here is stunning. You’ll see some of the most paradisical beaches in the Dominican Republic, some of the most turquoise waters in the Caribbean and gorgeous scenery with swaying palm trees, a natural swimming pool and island vibe everywhere. And if you walk a little bit to the left or to the right from where your group is staying at Saona, you even have the chance to discover some pristine beaches.

Local expert tip: Saona Island is mostly free of seaweed, which is particularly important during the heavy seaweed season in Punta Cana 2025.

Nearly all tours to Isla Saona include transfers from your hotel, one trip by catamaran, one trip by speed boat, lunch, entertainment and drinks.  If you are still not getting familiar with the idea of visiting Isla Saona, why not visiting Isla Catalina, the little and less-crowded neighbor of Saona Island. On this activity, one of the best catamaran tours in the Dominican Republic, you have the advantage that both ways are done by catamaran, allowing you more time to enjoy this Caribbean cruise vibe you are so much looking forward to.  If you love to see the wildlife of the Dominican Republic, a Punta Cana excursion to Los Haitises National Park is a great fit. Los Haitises National Park is one of the national parks in the Dominican Republic with the greatest biodiversity in the country. During a tour through the park by boat, you can not only see the mystic islands, the rugged landscape or ancient caves with centuries-old rock paintings from the native inhabitants but also spot fantastic wildlife such as frigate birds, manatees and pelicans – one of the best tours in Punta Cana for nature lovers! Los Haitises is also the most impressive national park you can reach from Punta Cana.

My personal expert advice: It is a pretty long ride from most resorts to Los Haitises National Park but it’s worth it, it is the most important national park in the Dominican Republic in terms of biodiversity.

 This Los Haitises excursion from Punta Cana* includes the transfer from your accommodation or all-inclusive resort, the boat trip through the national park and additional stops on the way.  If you feel that Los Haitises National Park is too far for you (after all, it is still a 2.5-hour drive on the bus each way), you can also book a Montana Redonda tour*, which is one of the most unique excursions in Punta Cana. 

 Montaña Redonda is a one-of-a-kind attraction in Punta Cana. It is a mountain with a spectacular 360-degree panorama surrounded by lush vegetation and untouched nature. The special features of Montaña Redonda are its giant swings and the cozy hammocks, both being set up right at the edge of the mountain, which allows for fantastic photo opportunities you can’t get anywhere else. When using the swings, you can take photos as if you are flying in the air. 

 To go up to Montaña Redonda, you board a safari truck at the bottom of the mountain. The drive is bumpy and a bit wild, but it’s worth it once you get to the top and can enjoy the truly gorgeous panoramic view. The use of the giant swings and hammocks at Montaña Redonda is for free. Kids will love these amenities, making Montaña Redonda a perfect kid-friendly excursion in Punta Cana.

 Depending on your excursion, you can also add a stop at one of the pristine beaches in the surrounding area, such as Playa Limon or Playa Esmeralda – a truly special adventure in Punta Cana to see a mile-long virgin beach without a single person so close to all the resorts.

9) Hoyo Azul (the Punta Cana Blue Lagoon)

 The Blue Lagoon in Punta Cana is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Punta Cana. This is not without a reason, because the Blue Lagoon, which is also called Hoyo Azul, is a Mexican-style cenote with such a turquoise color that it is hard to believe. The water is crystal clear and invites for a dip. Together with the surrounding jungle vibe, a visit to Hoyo Azul in Punta Cana is simply stunning. For the most marvelous views and the best chances to be there with only a few other guests (or alone if you’re very lucky) head to Hoyo Azul first thing in the morning when entering Scape Park Punta Cana.

 It is not possible to visit the Blue Lagoon on your own which is a bit of a bummer. It is part of Scape Park Cap Cana and you must book a full-day ticket to gain access*. Therefore, the easiest option to visit Hoyo Azul is to book a full-service excursion from Punta Cana to Scape Park Cap Cana, which not only includes the Blue Lagoon, but also an exciting ziplining adventure (incl. water adventure at the end), a cave tour, stunning pools, an artificial waterfall, some cultural immersion and a visit to another underground lagoon.  Scape Park Cap Cana isn’t for those traveling on a budget nor if you don’t like touristy theme parks, but if you want to admire the stunning beauty of Hoyo Azul, it is worth booking this Cap Cana excursion.

However, please note that whale watching is only available from January to March, during the mating season of the humpback whales. 16) Parasailing in Punta Cana

 Another fun and action-filled excursion in Punta Cana on the water is a parasailing tour*, albeit it is a much shorter adventure in Punta Cana. Even though the tour takes 2-3 hours including transfers, time on the boat, explanations, etc., the actual parasailing experience high up in the air usually only lasts around 10 to 15 minutes. 

 Even the time is short, it still is great fun to fly over the ocean, see the blue and turquoise colors of the Caribbean sea, feel the breeze in your face and watch the endless beaches and all-inclusive resorts of Punta Cana from the sky. It is a perfect excursion to do in Punta Cana if you don’t want to spend the whole day on the bus and are just looking for a quick Punta Cana adventure.

Furthermore, there are some free-style cables and a couple’s zipline, so you can race against each other.  If the recommended Xtreme Buggy Tour is too much (or too pricey for you), you can also check out the various ATV excursions in Punta Cana, where you can speed with all-terrain vehicles over off-road-trails through the pristine countryside.

 A particular recommendable ATV excursion in Punta Cana is the Flintstones tour*, which brings you away from all the typical buggy trails into the real Dominican backcountry. 20) Coco Bongo night tour in Punta Cana

 Ok, so we mentioned a lot of adrenaline-filled excursions and adventure tours in Punta Cana on the water and during the day. Would you like to continue having fun at night as well, then you have to visit Coco Bongo in Punta Cana*, which is the most famous entertainment show and nightclub in the area. Even though it is mainly made for tourists, also a lot of locals are heading to Coco Bongo, especially at the Congo Bar, which is kind of a separate bar beside the show.

 Coco Bongo Punta Cana is a huge entertainment venue and disco, which is presenting an amazing show every night full of atmosphere, with lots of colors and impressive dance performances. In between the show acts, the whole crowd is dancing to the sounds of the DJ, enjoying (basic) drinks from the open bar. Counting with such historical importance, Santo Domingo is also one of the best Punta Cana tours when it comes to culture, as you can immerse yourself in the local life and at the same time enjoy the stunning beauty of the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo.

 Having lived for 4 years right in Santo Domingo, I can tell you that the colonial zone is much more than a tourist attraction in the Dominican Republic. It is a place where Dominicans love to hang out, spend their weekends and enjoy their time with friends. Besides the colonial vibe, you can also enjoy several cozy coffee shops, family-owned art shops or various souvenir stores where you get much better prices than in Punta Cana.

Personal insider tip: if you read this blogpost carefully, you’ll see that the Santo Domingo sightseeing tour is also part of the excursions you should better skip. The reason for this is that in my opinion, it’s too far for a day-trip from Punta Cana, as you spend at least 3 hours in the bus each way. Therefore, my suggestion is to stay overnight in the Colonial Zone to be able to enjoy the unique vibe and vibrant (+safe) nightlife in the Zona Colonial.

 This excursion to Santo Domingo from Punta Cana* is done by bus, bringing you straight into the Colonial Zone. It is a long 2.5-3 hours bus ride though and therefore a full day trip, but once there, you can enjoy the various amenities of the Zona Colonial. While visiting a couple of historic places with your guide, you are also going to have free time to explore the hidden gems of the area on your own.

 If you feel that Santo Domingo is too far away and you don’t want to spend that much time on the bus, you can also visit Higuey on an excursion from Punta Cana, which is just around an hour away. Higuey doesn’t offer colorful buildings or a colonial vibe, but you can see 100% of the Dominican life as Higuey is a low-key working-class city, the 9th biggest in the Dominican Republic (if counting Santo Domingo as 1 city and not as 4 cities according to the provincial boundaries). Furthermore, Higuey is home to the most important church in the Dominican Republic, the impressive Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia.

 During a Tour from Punta Cana to Higuey*, you will not only visit the cathedral, but also a local market, where you can buy a lot of stuff for daily life for very cheap prices. While souvenirs might be rare at these markets, it is a great opportunity to see the local life and watch the challenges the Dominicans encounter in their day-to-day business. You also get an idea of the local produce as well as the prices of food and everyday items, which aren’t cheap in the Dominican Republic considering that the minimum wage is just around 250-400 USD per month.

Most all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana don’t offer lobster within their all-inclusive meal plan (except for a few upscale resorts such as Finest Punta Cana, where Lobster is served for dinner in their seafood restaurant, or also RIU Palace Bavaro, where we recently stayed and had the lobster on the steakhouse menu), but now you have the chance to participate in a unique lobster experience in Punta Cana.

28) Punta Cana theme parks

 One way of achieving the challenge to experience different activities and tours in Punta Cana on one day is to visit one of the theme parks in Punta Cana. They allow you to enjoy a full day of fun and action by just paying one price, similar to the theme parks in the United States or Europe. Transfers from the all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana are also included.

Three main theme parks allow you to enjoy some of the top excursions in Punta Cana in one day:
– Scape Park Punta Cana*
– Bavaro Adventure Park*
– La Hacienda Park*

 Scape Park Punta Cana is famous for its fantastic eco-splash zipline and the unique Hoyo Azul, also known as Blue Lagoon which was already presented at one of the excursion recommendations above. In my opinion, it is the most exciting theme park, but also the most commercialized one. It is located in the south of Punta Cana and marks a perfect Cap Cana excursion.

 Bavaro Adventure Park is perfect if you don’t want to travel far as it is located right in Bavaro, close to most of the all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana. It allows you to pick between different activity options, among them, ziplining, a dune buggy ride, river tubing or horseback riding. It is a perfect Punta Cana family excursion as the activities are very kid-friendly – they have something happening for every age.

 La Hacienda Park is the most authentic option among the amusement parks in Punta Cana and offers you the most stunning impressions when it comes to nature as it is located right in the Anamuya Mountains, around an hour away from Punta Cana. They have the only chairlift in Punta Cana, a few ziplining cables (with spectacular views!) and give you an introduction to Dominican culture, among many other activities.

30) Caribbean Lake Park 

Another combo option if looking for multiple activities in Punta Cana is the Caribbean Lake Park*. It is a large new park around some artificial lakes with a lot of water-based activities and a pretty cool and contemporary restaurant. A Tibetan bridge, a floating circuit, zip lines, a doughnut ride and wakeboarding are just some of the attractions you can enjoy when visiting the Caribbean Lake Park. The park is centrally located in Downtown Bavaro and just 20 minutes away from most of the hotels, even those in Cap Cana.

The most unique excursions in Punta Cana

 There are some excursions in Punta Cana, which are not fitting in the categories above. They might include a bit of nature, they might give you some quick information about culture, but in the end, they are one-of-a-kind because of very different reasons. This section might be expanded in the future as there are also new tours in Punta Cana popping up every now and then, but for the moment these are some of the most unique excursions in Punta Cana for 2025 and 2026.

31) Scuba Doo in Punta Cana

 If you don’t feel attracted by snorkeling in Punta Cana and don’t have a diver’s license, you can do a completely new activity which is called Scuba Doo, combining the attractive sides of both, snorkeling and scuba diving. 

 During a Scuba Doo excursion in Punta Cana*, you are going to dive much deeper than during a snorkeling tour. You even don’t need a mask as you get kind of a full-head helmet, which allows you to breathe, to see the marine life and to enjoy the experience. Furthermore, you are seated on a kind of machine, which carries your oxygen and allows you to move down comfortably. 

Personal expert tip: just note that the time underwater is rather short, usually around 15 to 20 minutes. Most people don’t know this, which is why the reviews of this tour are rather mediocre.

 This new tour in Punta Cana is not the most natural way of exploring marine life compared to snorkeling or scuba diving, but it allows you to explore the reefs and fishes much closer. Furthermore, as this is a rather shorter and relaxed tour (the time underwater is not very long), it is also recommendable as a kid-friendly excursion in Punta Cana.

 Ok, we have presented the party boats and catamaran tours in Punta Cana above, but there is a special boat you shouldn’t miss if you’re looking for a very unique excursion in Punta Cana: the Punta Cana pirate ship*. Compared to the typical catamarans, this boat is massive and impressive! You’re not only going to see the (limited) underwater world of Punta Cana while snorkeling, but you’ll also experience a cool pirates show, action-loaded battles with swords and ropes as well as a unique pirates party. This Punta Cana activity is different from what you’re used to – if it’s better than the typical party boats in Punta Cana, depends on what exactly you’re looking for.

Sometimes you might be with a particular small group, especially when booking the hiking activity, the mountain bike excursion or the helicopter tours in Punta Cana, but sometimes the tour groups are pretty huge. Therefore, especially when traveling with friends or a big family, a private tour might be much more suitable – especially as private excursions in Punta Cana are sometimes cheaper than you might think. In this case, the following overview of the best private tours in Punta Cana can help.

34) Deep Sea Fishing in Punta Cana

 Deep-sea fishing is one of the activities that a lot of people want to try in their lives. While there are shared group excursions available for deep sea fishing in Punta Cana, a lot of them receive bad reviews, usually because the group has different interests (fishing as much as you can vs. not getting seasick, for example) on this trip and it is hard for the crew to please everyone.

Pro tip from your local expert: take a seasickness pill before the tour, you won’t regret it.

 Therefore, a private Punta Cana tour for deep sea fishing* is the best solution. The crew can take care of your preferences and adjust the trip according to your fishing experience or seasickness vulnerability. Therefore they are better able to create a pleasant experience for you.

 Another option for a private boat rental in Punta Cana is to charter a private yacht* to go to Isla Saona. This is a particularly great option if you want to avoid all the common complaints of most shared Saona tours, such as
– overcrowded beaches
– various pick-up points
– long transfers
– mediocre drinks and food

A further advantage is that you save much time on your way to Santo Domingo, as you don’t visit various all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana to pick up other guests before heading to the capital of the Dominican Republic.

 Besides this, you have the chance to discover the cultural heritage of the Dominican Republic at your own pace, accompanied by a guide. As already described above, the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo is simply stunning and beautiful. It is not just a tourist area, it is like an open-air museum populated by Dominicans.  The last thing on this unique hand-selected list of the best excursion in Punta Cana 2025 is not really an excursion, it is rather a special recommendation for a very unique Punta Cana holiday: a road trip from Punta Cana to the interior of the Dominican Republic, where you get to see the various beautiful parts of the country.

A road trip in the Dominican Republic might sound adventurous at the first glance, but a closer look reveals the potential for an exceptional holiday. While Punta Cana is mostly famous for its all-inclusive resorts, the Dominican Republic is a massive outdoor adventure playground, hence every road trip will be a true joy.

Excursions in Punta Cana you better skip 

Dolphin Discovery Punta Cana (swim with the dolphins)

One Punta Cana excursion to avoid is the dolphin swim in Punta Cana. While the kids will love it, you should know that the dolphins are living in captivity and are forced to interact with humans. They are not even living in the ocean – they live in small pools not made for the natural behaviors of dolphins. Furthermore, the dolphins are mostly imported from other countries. All those are reasons why you should avoid the swim with the dolphins encounter excursion in Punta Cana. 

Just in case you’re wondering, swim with the dolphins in the Dominican Republic, Dolphin Explorer, Dolphin Discovery, Dolphin Island Punta Cana or dolphin park are all the same tour and place – just skip it and choose one of the real natural wonders in the Dominican Republic. If you want to see large mammals, better opt for the whale-watching excursions from Punta Cana.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: the dolphins are living in captivity and shouldn’t be forced to interact with humans.
Better alternative: whale-watching in the Dominican Republic

Sharks & Stingray Encounter in Punta Cana / Marinarium

Pretty much the same as for the swim with the dolphins in Punta Cana applies to the sharks and stingray encounter in Punta Cana. People often think they can interact with happy fish in the open ocean, but the opposite is the case in this area called Marinarium: the stingrays and sharks are cooped into a super small area, bordered by fences so they can’t escape – a pretty poor scenery, which is also confirmed by many other travelers passing here or participating. Contrary to the dolphins, the stingrays and sharks in Punta Cana at least are living in the ocean, but the conditions are not even mediocre – they’re very poor. 

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: even though the stingrays and sharks live in the open ocean, they’re held in captivity and experience very poor living conditions.
Better alternative: whale-watching in the Dominican Republic

Los Ojos Indígenas Punta Cana / Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve

Contrary to the two excursions you should avoid in Punta Cana, the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve is an incredibly beautiful space and you most likely will have a great time here. It is an area comprised of around a dozen crystal-clear lagoons, connected with shaded hiking trails, surrounded by a super peaceful environment. You can swim in some of the cenotes and explore them by swimming or snorkeling.

You might ask now why this is a thing not to do in Punta Cana if it’s that beautiful. I tell you why: because of the price. Los Ojos Indigenas Punta Cana is part of one of Punta Canas’ most important (luxury) tourism companies (called Puntacana Resort) and to avoid too many people, they have raised the prices to a level making it unattractive to visit (except for their guests at Westin Punta Cana Resort, Four Points by Sheraton and Tortuga Bay Resort). The entrance fee is 80 USD per person and doesn’t include any transfers, drinks, entertainment or food – it is just the entrance fee and a guided walk for around 2 hours. Considering that a ticket for most cenotes in Mexico (and also the few cenotes in the Dominican Republic) is usually between 2 and 10 USD and that the similar Hoyo Claro in Punta Cana costs 5 USD entrance, this is simply too expensive and only worth the money if you either really want to explore every cenote in Punta Cana or don’t care that much about your money spent on vacation.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: even though it is beautiful, the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve is simply too expensive.
Better alternative: Hoyo Claro in Punta Cana

Salto El Limón Full-Day Excursion via bus and boat

The Samaná Excursion by bus and boat is not a bad one, but it is – as mentioned above – a long one. If you don’t mind spending the entire day from 7 am to 7 pm outside of your resort, you will have a great time, but usually, there are better options closer to Punta Cana with less time on the road. Alternatively, if you want to go to Samaná, I highly recommend planning a road-trip to Samaná for multiple days – like this, you can experience the real Dominican hospitality and several natural wonders.

Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: the Samaná tour from Punta Cana offers many beautiful experiences, but it is simply a very long one.
Better alternative: Samaná road-trip for at least 3 days

Viewpoint of Salto El Limón

Santo Domingo Sightseeing Excursion

 The same what is said for the Samaná Excursion from Punta Cana also applies to the Santo Domingo tour from Punta Cana. It is a long journey, which is only worth it if you’re a history buff or love to stroll through old colonial towns and cities. In this case, Santo Domingo is worth a trip, but otherwise, you might want to avoid this Punta Cana tour as you might get bored on the bus. It is a 2.5-hour drive which often can be 3.5 hours factoring in picking up other passengers, a bathroom and snack break in the middle of the journey and the often gridlocked traffic in Santo Domingo. To avoid this, you can either book a private excursion to Santo Domingo* (you can’t change the traffic, but there won’t be any pick-ups from other hotels or unwanted stops on the way) or have a look at the plane excursion to Santo Domingo from Punta Cana*.

 Why avoid this Punta Cana excursion: Santo Domingo is more than 100 miles away and a long trip. It is culturally super interesting but you should only go if you are ok with being away from Punta Cana for at least 12 hours.
Better alternative: Santo Domingo Private Excursion*
